Case mod: Color change

So I work for a company that does various types of coatings, we do dip spin, powder, and liquid spray. We just got a new line set up at work, I think they call it e-coat, not sure.

I jokingly asked about trying a computer case in it, just for kicks, and one guy was like "ask Randy, I bet we could R&D it".:D

So, I was talking with Mr. Randy and he said sure.

I am hoping to have my case back tomorrow night, everything but the plastics will be satin black, the plastics, I am not sure what color I am going to go yet. I am thinking maybe a charcoal black over a texture paint. The process being used can not do plastics, the material has to be conductive to start with. If this case was plated chrome, the resulting finish would be more of a gloss, since some surfaces are painted, we will prob blast off the paint or put it in the stripper tank.

The back plane, PCI slot blanks, and the screws I intend to leave alone, they have a chrome-like finish and should offset the black quite nicely. I am still on the fence about a window.

Well, I figured I should give an update.

The electro-coat system did not work.

One panel was done, the finish was streaked pretty badly.

It was recommended that the next panel sat in the alkaline cleaner for a bit longer, came out the same.

The remainder of the case was done, this time, voltage was cranked, and the inside portion of the case was not even coated.....

As a result, I was told I could get my case powder coated with any powder we had on hand.

I got it coated, and I got the plastics painted to match.

I might show you some pics tomorrow, I am tired, and, if I keep you waiting, you'll enjoy it more:cool:

I did offer up my alum server case for r&d if/when they think the problems have been addressed.

looks cool. I always think powder coating is a good way to go. Less to no chipping.

This case is like 7 or 8 years old, you see the orig pics, with no bay covers, I lost them years ago:mad:

I found some that fit, and super glued them in there.:D

The rear fan is a 92mm variable, temp controlled. One of the ears broke off, so, I had t use some double stick tape to hold it, I have some 3" machine thread screws and washers, bu no nuts:rolleyes:

This thing was a pita to get finished.

I am going to fix the fan issue, get some mesh sleeving for the un-sheathed wires, and paint the chrome on the nic/vid.
