Can't overclock 6970

I have a sapphire 6970, bought when the 6970 just came out. I see that people overclock to the highest that they can in CCC with this type of card and download apps to go even higher. I can't overclock higher than 925 core 1400 mem without it freezing my computer. Any suggestions?

Whats the specs on the rest of your system? What power supply do you have?

Sorry should know this by now, heh.

I7 920
Asus P6T6 Revolution WS MB
1x 6970
4x hard drives
700W power

I can set the memory OC to as high as the thing goes but if I go near 950 for core it freezes. Before this I had 2x 4970s and I could OC them to the same limits as everyone else with stock voltage.

is it reference board? if its not...then you probably have the "cheap" component version...

How do I know which it is?

Maybe it is getting too hot, on stock settings its 91 C when its at 99% activity

Whats weird is that in a benchmarking utility I use if it put it at 900 mhz for core I get ~365 Mhash/s then any higher it gets lower like at 925 it is ~355. I dont know what this means but when its at 925 after a little while it will freeze the computer and I have to hard reset.

I haven't checked 69xx temps, but 90+ c is hot as fuck.

Edit: Yeah, that's way over normal. What's your ambient temp? Have you messed with the heatsink/fan at all? That temp alone could almost definitely cause instability.

And exactly how is it way over normal?

My 6970 easily runs in the high 80's under load, normally at 88-89C and under heavy GPGPU computing temps average ~95 easily.

In the [H] review of the 6970 theres was at 89C under load too.

Reason? AMD's heatsink design is a bag of shit.

have you tried manually controlling the fan on the video card? if you havent then thats probably your problem. bump that fan between 80-100% and see if you get better results.

91c is hella hot....especially when overclocking. id try to keep it under 83c while o/cing on air with the reference heatsink.
