Okay so I can't my Q6600 G0 to O/C any higher on my DS3R at 8x400 (3.2ghz). I've read the how to overclock gigabyte xxx thread and the how to overclock C2D/quadcore thread.
A funny thing is that I can get to 3.2 ghz at a 1.35 vcore but I can't get it to 3.3ghz at like 1.375 or higher.

Here's what I've tried:

All power saving options off.
2.00 memory multiplier.
Used a 9x356+ (3.2ghz+)
Ram timings at 5-5-5-15
Overvolted everything by +0.1V and tried a +0.2V on the memory
Used 1.375 vcore and higher vcore.

Temps:
Idle at 1.3500 vcore = 34 C on all cores
Load at " " = 54 on all cores

Specs:

Q6600 g0 with tuniq tower
P35-DS3R rev. 1
4x1gb of G.Skill DDR2 PC6400 5-5-5-15
8800 GTS 640mb
Corsair 520HX
HD raptor

The sounds very much like a chip limit; one move up in Vcore, then it's a no go.

I've noticed that to hit 3.6ghz (9x400) I had to pump up the vcore a retarded amount compared to 3.2ghz (8x400). Even then I couldn't Prime95 test for long because it was reaching 70C after a minute or two. The performance jump from 3.2 to 3.6 was not even remotely enough to justify those voltages and heat on my non-lapped, air cooled system.

I'm very happy at 3.2ghz and unless I splurge for water cooling I suspect I'll be staying at that speed indefinitely.

I had to bring up my voltage to 1.37 to hit 3.4 ghz, then I had to go up to 1.42 to hit 3.6. I suspect that if watercooled well enough, I still have some headroom to push as high as 4.0ghz... but since I still lug around my pc, I can't justify having any liquid in it not to mention it's weight addition...

Hopefully it isn't your board. I once had a Gigabyte DS3 Rev3.3 that refused to go above 3.4GHz on a E6600 no matter what combination I tried. It wasn't the chip because it booted as high as 3.7GHz on a Rev1.0 board as well as an IP35-E... so here's what you should try to see if your board has this annoying problem.

1. Set VCore to 1.45V (or whatever you feel will stable for 3.3GHz)
2. Set 370x8 in the bios
3. Set RAM 1:1 with loose 5-5-5-15 timings
4. Save and exit bios
5. Re-enter bios after reboot right away.
6. Switch 370x8 to 370x9
7. Save and exit bios

If the board boots at 370x9 then you may have a flaky board which will not cold boot at above 3.2GHz for a reason that I do not know of.

Oh my god you saved me! I never thought I could get my q6600 get past 3.0ghz I was starting to think something was fishy, but I got it at 3.33ghz!

many thanks

Your only problem is your board may not want to cold boot with the x9 multiplier - it may just freeze up a post like my old DS3 did, so if it doesn't you'll have to repeat the process. If that's the case and it bothers you either may want to get a new board through RMA or leave the computer on 24/7 because I don't think there is a fix for it, at least not that I know of. Not all DS3 Rev3.3 had this problem like mine did.

By the way... it doesn't only work at 370x9 :p. Set any combination with the x8 multiplier, or even the x7... you can set 400x8 (or 400x7) and change it to 400x9 to run 3.6GHz. Just set all of your voltages as if you were going to run your final speed because I'm not sure if the board will restart with a voltage change. They key is to change your CPU speed without having the board shutoff and turn back on, and simply just changing the multiplier will do that.

Turning off Detect Legacy USB Devices helps in combating the cold boot issue on the Gigabyte boards but its not 100% effective. Sometimes you'll have to reset settings you KNOW work a couple of times after failed boots. After she boots then I'm in business and just use Sleep Mode after that. She fires up like a charm and the only thing I have to reset is my 8800GTS fan back to 100%.

i built a very similar system, only thing i did differnt was 2x2gig sticks and a barracuda Hard drive.. I had the same problem.. i had to go to 1.45v in bios any 1.32v on cpu-z to get me to run 3.1ghz stable.... but i was abel to hit 11,585 in 3d mark 06 with my setup, so im happy.. but if you figure it out let me know...

p.s. i read both guides too, very helpful..

hm, i can't figure what exactly is my problem... my DS3R or my Q6600 unfortunate oc limit.

i had the same problem, couldnt get past 3.2, turns out theres somthing called a fsb hole, where you mobo or cpu (i cant remember which) wont boot at certain fsb ranges, i have a hole from 3.22-3.58 (something like that) i bumped the fsb up to 400 but had to change the vcore all they way to 1.48 or something ridiculously high. I didnt play around with it much changing more than just the voltage and fsb, so maybe theres a way around it... anyone have some insight on fsb holes? i gave up about a month ago, atm im running 3.0ghz @ 1.26v

if its a mobo issue ill prob swap it out, i lapped my chip...

no FSB holes on the P5K Deluxe that I know of since I've been messing with it for awhile now as my main rig.

I'll reboot and see which settings work for me and hopefully it'll point out something you missed, I did a round of testing at 8x450 and 9x400. When I initially put this system together I kept playing around starting at 3.0ghz until I had hit a peak of 3.9 post on stock voltage, with the voltages nearly maxed out save for the CPU, I could post 4.0ghz and get into windows, but was NOT prime stable...

so getting in the 3.2+ range shouldn't be too hard provided your ram is up to the task.

a picture shows my settings better, first set of pics are 8x450

at 9x400 I can leave all the voltage settings for the mobo on their minimum. save for ram and vcore.

Basically you need voltage to get the cpu overclocked. If left to auto my voltage will be 1.37V and that is good for 3.4ghz prime stable 12+hours.

To get 1.42 which is what I need for 3.6ghz, I need to set it at 1.46V.

Would that work with the ASUS P5N-e SLI board??
I get random bsods when my Q6600 is at 3.1 but it's just fine at 3.0.

Try jumping right to 3.6GHz, from what I read there is a FSB "hole" that wont allow you to boot at the 3.2-3.6 range. I haven't tested that though...

I tried that with my quad/P5N-e & I couldn't boot at 1500FSB/vcore 1.4/NB volt at 1.90/multi at 6/LDT at 1.
Also tried at 1450. No luck.
Guess I need a better board.
