I'm a noob in overclocking. I have build my first rig with the following components:
P35c-Ds3r rev 2.0
Q6600
OCZ2N1066SR2GK (2gb total 2*1)
Zalman 9700 led
Zalman HP600
MSI 8800GTS 512mb OC version
Antec Nine hundred
Bios F4
Creative Xi-Fi Music

My bios is set up like this:
Advanced BIOS
Hard disk boor priority= Press enter
first boot device = floppy
Second boot device = cd rom
third boot device = hard disk
password check = setup
hdd s.m.a.r.t. capability = enabled
limit cpuid max. to 3 = disabled
No-Execute Memory Protect = Enabled
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) = Enabled
CPU Theremal Monitor 2(TM2) = Enabled
CPU EIST Function = Disabled
Virtualization Technology = Enabled
full screen logo show = disabled
init display first = PEG
Power Management Setup
HPET Support = Enabled
HPET Mode = 32-bit mode

PC Health Status
Smart FAN Control Method = auto
Smart FAN Control Mode = Auto

MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)
robuust graphics booster = auto
CPU Clock Ration = 9 X
CPU Host Clock Control = Disabled
CPU Host Freq = 266
PCI Express frequency = auto
C.I.A.2 = Disabled
Performance Enhance = Standard
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) = auto
[Memory Frequency(Mhz) 1066 1066
High Speed DRAM DLL Settings = Option 1
DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) = Manual
CAS Latency Time = 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay = 5
DRAM RAS# Precharge = 5
Precharge delay(tRAS) = 15
Act to Act delay = auto
Rank write to read delay = auto
write to read delay = auto
refresh to act delay = 0
refresh tp precharge delay = auto
tRD = auto
tRD phase adjustment = auto
*******system voltage optimized********
System Voltage Control = Manual
DDR2/DDR3 OverVoltage Control = +0.4V
PCI-E OverVoltage Control = normal
FSB OverVoltage Control = normal
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control = normal
CPU Voltage Control = normal
Normal CPU Vcore = 1.287500V

When i try overclocking my bios starts up then shutsdown and resets to the above settings. For overclocking I only change the folowing settings , lets say I OC from 266 to 270:

CPU Host Clock Control = Enabled
CPU Host Freq = 270
PCI Express frequency = 100
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) = 2.0
[Memory Frequency(Mhz) 1066 540

The problem is that if I save my settings my bios starts up. Than stops after the cpu ( 9*270 = 2430) line with just showing a part of the memory test line. I don't have a clue what i'm doing wrong. It just won't boot through. My memory is at the support list and on stock it runs perfectly.

Up the CPU voltage, but howmuch? And is it logical to already up the cpu voltage for a 266->270 step?
Advanced bios settings-> disable C1E and TM2?
Change the memory timmings to auto?
Can external harddisks be a problem?

Lot's of questions but I just don't know how to get it past bios boot. A friend of mine has exactly the same rig and running 3.4ghz at ease

please help.... because i know my set can do it......

I highly doubt you have to increase your CPU voltage. I was able to jump to 334 without increasing the CPU voltage (mine is at 1.2875 as well).

I dont think you have to disable C1E as well because your not jumping that high up.

It might be your RAM voltage? Go to newegg.com and check for your memory and go to specifications and check the voltage of your RAM and go to your BIOS and set it to the lowest number range in newegg. For example, I have this RAM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231145

and the range is (2.0-2.1v) so I went into my BIOS and set my memory to 2.0V (it originally was much lower in the BIOS). I also set my timings to 5-5-5-15 and I also set my FSB to about 300 and just started up comp and it worked.

If that doesn't work. I suggest you just turn your comp on at factory settings and run prime95 and see your temperatures and that might be a problem.

also one thing to remember overclocking is an art, you cant hamfist it, and just because your friend can o/c his to 3.4 doesnt mean you can or will (or you may even get a higher o/c then your friend, who knows)

but one thing i notice in all the info you posed, and keep in mind i havent owned a current intel rig, but is your memory running at 1066mhz currently or is it just that its 1066mhz capable?

Well guys, i figured it out. I'm using 2 western digital mybook external harddisks. In the bios there is a setting "legacy USB Boot Device" which was enabled.

By disabling this it posted through the boot and is overclocking like sunshine....

and none of us would have ever guessed something like that
