What is the general consensus on which is the better printer manufacturer? In terms of print quality and overall cost per print?

I had one Canon that died within 3 months. And my current Epson C80 eats ink. I have to get a new printer because I need to print out my art/ad work so I can find a new job (My company just filled Chap7 and me AND my wife are not outta work!)

Any recommendations? I love the prints on the Canon i9900 but the printer is 430$, and I can't seem to find a larger format one for Epson.

Any tips, comments, barbs, jokes, appreciated.
 
I like Canons more; I've had 2 Epsons in the past (400, 580) and they ate through ink incredibly fast; in fact, the whole ink thing is being brought up in a legal battle where people are claiming that Epson programs their printers to report low ink levels when you're really in the clear.

I find that unless you're using those high level printers, Canon has the better print quality from what I've seen.
 
I'm not a big fan of Epsons. Had a roommate move out and leave his Epson (it was ok, but it tended to be quirky). After he left I never really got it to right or consistently.

Got a Canon i470D at the end of last year and it's been doing great for me.

You left out the brand many consider to be the best. Of course I'd be accused of being biased, but HP printers are awesome. But, if I had to pick between Epson and Canon, it would be an easy choice. Epson. Every Canon printer I see and play around with feels very cheaply made. I'm not a fan of theirs, and not really liking their build methods. A few of my industry contacts always say their internal mechanisms are shitty and are very prone to failure. I'd get either an HP or an Epson.
 
Depends if you care more about print quality or price. Canon (and HP) have superior print quality to Epson, but even though they tend to use more ink, the Epsons can be run very cheaply. I have an Epson Stylus Color 880 and I get brand new (although generic brand) cartridges for $5 a piece from inkquik.com, so thats an incredible savings.
 
The consensus appears to be that Epson printers are cheap to purchase, expensive in usage (ink!), and quite unreliable, whereas Canon printers are reasonably priced, quite cheap in usage (for many models, colors are in seperate containers, so you only have to replace the color that is empty) and quite reliable.

Get an Epson if you don't mind paying lots of money for ink. Otherwise get the Canon, because it'll print at least as well, but for a far lower price.
