Canon 7D

Yeah I got the announcement on Sept 1. Man spec wise, that looks like a sexy full feature camera....

I am so excited for this....sold my beloved 40D not to long ago and was thinking of getting the 50D but this 7D changes the gameplan.

From the looks of one of the reviews that I found on the POTN this is not much better than the 50D. IT IS NOT A FULL FRAME CAMERA, this is still a 1.6x crop body but with a 100% viewfinder. From what the review shows the different photos at different ISOs are not much better than the 50D (and in many cases are lower quality at higher ISO). This one seems to be a bit of a mixed bag.

For those not interested in a full frame camera, who are not professionals but still want 8 fps [without the cost of the 1D series], 19 point AF, 18 MP plus HD video, the 100% viewfinder is just icing on the already tasty looking cake.

seems like a Canon just released a "Guinea Pig" which will work as a battlefield for future cameras. wireless flash control is one of the biggest improvements. IMO. pretty good camera for the Canon camp.

I'm stuck after I seen this.

I was looking at the 5D M2 that has really nice ISO's for low light, then this 7D came along with the 8FPS and it's about $1k cheaper...Not sure what to do here

do you need/want full frame camera or not? can you afford full frame? what lenses do you have? how much you want to invest in this?

I don't have the money for either, but I'm saving for either.

Need a full frame? Maybe not yet, want, yes. I have a wide 10-22, 50mm 1.4, XT kit lens & some zoom lens right now.

Is the low light THAT great on the Mark2 over the 7D? I guess we are waiting for actual tests...

the 10-22, if i recall is an EF-S lens, so that won't work on the 5dmk2. Your kit lens won't work either. the 50 mm would though. This is the case if you decide to switch to FF. If you upgrade to the 7D, you can still use the lenses you have. Regarding noise between the 5dmk2 and the 7D. As of right now.... initial tests show the 7D noise equivalent to the 50D which is pretty bad. The 5dmk2 handles noise a lot better than the 7D.

Back at point zero after reading that

Well as Northrup said, it depends on where you want to go and if you want to upgrade the rest of your "arsenal" now or later with a new body. After going through a few reviews and looking at the specs I am taking more of a shining to the 7D. While for me a full frame body would be nice it would require me to upgrade all my lenses at the same time (which I dont have the money for). so if I wanted a more functional body (currently using my trusty 20D) that had more features, more MP, and is just more updated then I would go with the 7D. Think I will keep an eye on this and then see if Mrs. Clause might get it for me. :)

actually, lets go about it from a different perspective.

what type of photography do you do? if you shoot mostly wild life, or anything that requires a long telephone lens, you will benefit from the crop camera. if landscapes is what you're after, then you should consider getting the full frame camera for "better" wide angle possibilities.

I don't think Canon's lenses are good on the modern crop cameras. So I'd consider upgrading lenses regardless. That's just my experience and opinion. If you can really use the new body's feature, it makes sense to get it.

The problem is, I shoot all kinds of stuff. My main use will be for storm chasing (tornado's, thunderstorms, etc.) but there is lots of random things in between. I want to get into portraits and a good low light sensor would be great for that and I think it would help during dark thunderstorms also.

Here I was not using a tripod since I didn't exactly have time to set it up and think I could benefit from the nicer low light sensor.

I'm seriously debating this camera as an upgrade to my 40D. Although there's always the 5D MKII...

Although that's a very long debate on which is truly the better route for me.
