I have a Radeon 9800 pro with 128 mb ram on it and that arctic cooler.

Recently, I tried to play Counter-Strike, to find that after about 5 seconds of gameplay, the computer locks up...The screen will either lock a solid image and the sound repeats, or once in awhile the screen will look as if someone pulled the monitor plug half out of the socket and it just gets garbled and distorted. Can't ctrl-alt-delete or anything, have to hard reboot.

Same thing goes for HL2.

I updated my graphics drivers with the latest omega drivers, still have the same problem.

Anything I should do?

edit - also locks up during 3dmark
 
Did you remove the shim around the GPU when you replaced the F/HS ?
You should remove that AC Cooler and see what kind of a contact pattern you have between the HS and the GPU! It's kinda hit and miss as to which cards require that shim be removed for full contact between the HS and the GPU, but in any case removing that shim will give you full contact.
Just be carefull when you remount the F/HS so you don't damage any thing ! :)
Oh and for the record, I'm running the same Card and f/hs that you are! :)
 
Just out of curiosity though, should I still do what you suggested even though it worked fine for abour 6 months?
 
i would recomend taking the cooler off and reappying thermal compound and make sure everything is still making good contact. your card may just be on its way out, but it sounds like an overheating issue to me
 
I would recommend going into your system's bios, and resetting it to optimized defaults. Then try gaming again.
 
Took the system apart, found the arctic cooler wasn't very tight on the videocard cpu. Tightened 2 screws, thing works fine.
