I just bought Half Life 2, finally, and it said that the HDR affect reccommended for me was full can my 9800 pro render HDR my options were off, bloom or full.

Try it and check your framerates... best way to know for sure. Enable developer console under advanced options in the keyboard menu. press "~" to open it up. type in "cl_showfps 1" and your FPS will be displayed in the top right corner. Adjust options till you get the FPS you like.... If I had to venture a guess, I'd say probably not. But you might be able to run some other things on high, but I don't think AA or AF.

dont quote me on this...

but with HDR on you cant run AA or AF last i knew

im not sure how a 9800 pro will hold up though search for some benchmarks out there

I am running HL2 on a 9800pro 128mb and the game works fine with no lag on medium settings running at 1024x768 and yep cs:s same story no lag what so ever but all settings are on MEDIUM. So i am guessing the HDR must work on a newer version on the 9800pro 256 or whatever you have

lag is a connection issue...

when a game slows down its the hardware working harder to render possibly better graphics and whatnot

lately with CS:S with there new patches the game runs horrible... sometimes i cant stand playing it

I am asking if it can render HDR not what settings to play at I can play at 1024/768 all settings high including sound (thank god I bought that audigy 2 ZS) except the reflect setting. I haven't even tried to add AA or AF yet.

I believe it can, it can run Rthdribl, which stand for Real-time High Dynamic Range Image-Based Lighting.

*EDIT*
I'll report back in a little bit, I can run DoD:S on my old 9800 Pro and see what happens.

The 9800pro can definately do HDR. RTHDRIBL and HL2:Lost Coast prove this.

With both of the above examples of HDR, AA and AF can be applied.

OpenEXR HDR is another matter. Games such as FarCry and SC:CT (I think) use the OpenEXR format. Only the Geforce 6-7 and Radeon X1K series can do OpenEXR HDR, and only the X1K can do it with MSAA.

Works just fine in DoD:S. Seems like it is too much for the card to handle though.

It cannot do Full HDR. It can support the Bloom HDR esque effect. Full HDR requires 3.0 SM dx 9.0c stuff.

Uh... No...

DoD:S, Lost Coast, and RTHDRIBL are all "full" HDR, supported by any SM2 or higher card.

I believe you are referring to OpenEXR HDR, but that has nothing to do with SM3.

But can he run them while still be playable?
I doubt it unless he turns down some settings even the HDR in Half Life 2 can bring a card down to its knees.
