Ok, so I have a a bunch of questions, and would love to hear reviews from everyone that has a 4850, as I'm on the verge of ordering one...I have a few questions before I do, and i think the questions could help lots of people

Anyone upgrade from a 8800gts 320mb? What type of improvement? (i sold my 8800gts for 200 dollars :rolleyes: , so its a free upgrade)

Can the 4850 run well on my Neopower480w...with rig in sig?

Most important question for me is
How high of overclocks are you getting? and how much more improvement is it? I plan getting the card with the zalman 2heatpipe fan on it..anyone else put on aftermarket cooling and see a big improvement in overclocking headroom? Performance?

ETA for rivatuner support? or another way to overclock? or is a bios flash still the only way to overclock it?...How hard is it to do?, is it risky?

I like mine alot. Using a Coolink GFXChilla on it and am very happy. It's overclocked via ATI-Tray Tools to 730/1100 @ 1.158v. I set it to idle at 160/500 @ 0.960v. I'll probably pencil mod in the near future to get some more juice out of it. All in all, great bang for your buck!

I'd suggest picking one up on the cheap, and putting an Akasa or a Coolink on it first thing. Really makes a difference in noise and cooling.
 
i went from a 6800gt to this. well ok i built a new system and WOW!

i think 680 was my limit with stock voltage.

yes a 480w will be good enough. my whole system according to APC is only pulling about 315w atm and this is with a power hungry phenom.

 
If you plan on overclocking, get one of the models with dual-slot cooling or replace the single-slot cooler yourself with something better. The stock cooler was designed to keep the card cool (if you can consider 80C idle and nearly 90C full load "cool") at stock speeds and doesn't give you much headroom when overclocking. I'm sure people are overclocking, but how long will the chips last? The only option is to turn up the fan speed, but then it gets very loud and annoying at higher settings.

One of the Things I noticed, and most users have, is the Heat issue with these Cards, to which I Ordered a XIGMATEK VD964 VGA Cooler to help keep things in Check. Other than showing just how much these Cards can Bottle neck the CPU at lower Resolutions, though I do think that as Drivers Mature, we'll see a nice bump in Performance, and Cooling capabilities. All in all, not a bad upgrade, as I'm going from an Asus EN9600GT 512, which certainly can Play Games at 1680x1050 without any Problems, but I wanted to start enabling more Filtering to see all the Eye Candy that everyones been talking about.

there is no heat issue. ati made it quiet

what about what games you guys are playing with it, and what settings/fps

And how much overclocking it helped?, i havnt seen any reviews with a maxed out overclocked 4850..

trying to get an idea on how well they are performing when they are getting pushed, maybe like 720core and 2200....anyone getting up that high? with aftermarket cooling maybe?

PS: this is [H], those are the kind of people im looking for to answer with their experiences, although the responces so far have been great!, im glad to hear it will be worth the upgrade!
 
fan adjustment - %50, stock temp 43, load 65 - not loud at all...


once you get over 65ish % it starts to get louder, buti have never seen my loads go over 70C while on 50%.
 
I'm running 24/7 730/1100. Was a noticeable improvement in games, World in Conflict, CoH, etc. I've heard the actual game performance increase past ~730 core is diminished.

Right now with the Xigmatek Cooler I'm running 26c idle, and 43C Load. As far as Games, I've only loaded NFS:proStreet, running at 1920 x 1200 with 4X AA and everything set to it's highest setting, and no Problems, Game is Fluid Graphics look Great, and I'm happy as now I can Game without concern for heat.
 
wife's rig running a visiontek 4850, upgraded from a bfg 6800gtoc, she has a 19 inch lg, max 1280x1024 in warhammer online with forced max aa and force 16x an, no problems. tf2 max everything, max aa as well, no problems.

card is clocked, using amd gpu oc tool, at 720 core and 1100 memory cooled by a thermaltake duorb 45 idle, 55 load
 
825/1100 @ 1.3v pencil mod. Though I am on water (40c max), I have heard/seen people up to 1.4v on good air (zalman). It's all about how much you want to take up the voltage. Figgure @ ~1.16v (stock) you will max out at 675-725 and you can get up to about 850-900+ depending on the voltage. For reference, in Crysis boosting from stock clocks (625/993 or something) to 825/1100 netted me ~6 fps (25 @ "very high" 1280x1024 to 31).
 
I highest oc i got mine to without artifacting is 690mhz and 2256mhz via the ccc catalyst auto tune feature. But i see people talking about increasing the voltage to get more as high as 720mhz? How is this done?

As for your psu question,
http://ati.amd.com/products/certified/powersupplies.html#pstop is the certified list and the neopower 480 is NOT on that list. But as long as you have minimum 36amps for the 12v rails you should be good to go. According to the Antec website there is no neopower 480w?
 
My card is in my sig. I went to this from a (G80) GTS 640MB 648/1500/900. In Crysis for example, I noticed about a 45% increase in performance. Multi-player went from 25-43fps to 40-77fps at the same settings. I tacked on some more eye-candy (custom-High look) and I'm now at 40-60fps in multi-player. In single-player the difference is crazy. Note, my system is tweaked to the heavens as well.
 
I cant overclock my cards for crap. I don't know what the deal is. Auto tune will set the lowest one to 690/1090 and I'll set the other one to that as well, but when I try to benchmark my computer freezes or the display driver crashes. I've even turned all my case fans on high and turned the cards to 100% fanspeed and still cant overclock for nothing. Not that at matters anyways though, because at stock speeds they fly.

Some reviews I've read stated that they had to drop the GPU clock down to 675 to get it stable. A good rule of thumb when overclocking anything is to do it in small steps until you reach the point of unstable. Then you just back it down a notch.

These cards don't overclock that well without doing a volt mod, so I'd say it's best to just leave them at stock unless you really notice an improvment with a slight overclock.
 
Keep in mind that overdrive boosts the profile voltage quite a bit when it auto-tunes, but manually setting your OC will not necessarily boost the voltage past 1.044v. I was only hitting ~675 at first but after forcing the 1.158v profile voltage I was able to push past 700. To test, download "ati tray tools" and force the voltage up to 1.158v along with the OC.
 
the card is happy (ok) at 95C they run hot. it crashes 3d game if I don't remember to speed the fan with a CCC hotkey. It is not like a CPU they can be hot. I take off my side panel for effective exhaust.
