My good friend is looking for a cheap CAD computer for school. Needs to run solid works. Any help is much appreciated!

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Computer Aided Design. Solidworks mainly
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

Alright, going by the recommendation that Stupid_Newbie says the HD3000 will work with Solidworks... Also since your friend is in school/going to school I am pretty sure Microsoft is still offering discounts on its operating system(s) to students. Search around on Google for more information on that, otherwise add $100 to the price I am about to give you.

Well if you aren't including the operating system in on the price, then upgrade the CPU to an i5 2500. It's a quad core w/ HD3000 graphics.
 
According to solidworks requirements, the HD3000, and HD4000 are approved GPUs. Id say your fine. It was a green check mark, so there was nothing saying any features would be missing.
 
NCIX has good deals on XFX 7700 right now (Canada). Price is around $110 after MIR.
