Cache + memory size and speed

I was just wondering what the best cheap processor is for folding and I was wondering if anybody knew the answers to these?

What effect does a large cache have on folding? Is a Sempron with 128k at 2GHz significantly slower than a XP with 256k or barton with 512k.

Does having more memory speed things up or is 256mb enough?

What effect does memory latency and speed (Mhz) have on folding?

If I remember correctly... folding pretty much relies on pure MHz.... and the type of processor... AMDs tend to fold a bit faster on Tinker units... Intel chips tend to eat through the new double gromacs like crazy...

I'm not sure what cache size would have to do with it... maybe some of the other folders can answer that one... I know that RAM size you only need about 64-128MB(subject to change with some of these "big packet" WUs they're pushing out now.... right now, my P4 2.66 here at work is only using about 25MB (client and core together)

Hope I could help

Keep on Folding!!

For Folding Mhz rules.
Double the speed of the processor and you double the speed it folds all other thing being equal.

Once you stop useing virtual memory on the hard drive then any extra memory wont alter the speed that you fold at.

I dont see any difference in folding speed if I fold off a ram drive as opposed to folding off a hard drive.

Anything that helps memory throughput has a slight improvement in the speed you fold.
So a high FSB and low latencies help.
Also haveing a large processor cache reduces the need for memory transferes between the processor and the main memory.
Dont have any figures for these iimprovements but they may be small.

Luck....... :D

Cache size doesn't affect folding speed but if it's a box that you use for things other than folding (do those really exist?) then extra cache *may* help a small amount in that your cpu will get done with other tasks slightly faster. Translation: Cache doesn't matter much.

It ain't the cheap processor - it's the whole ball of wax that counts.
Right now Outpost is
selling a m/b&bare 2200+ cpu combo for $49.

Cripes how low can you go ? That's the price of dinner for 2!

Holy schnikies!!!

How'd that handle folding? I'll buy 5 of em right now if they're even just decent!
