Hey gang,
I have been a longtime dsl user but the location of the house I just purchased does not have any available "open ports" or some other stupid excuse. Therefore I am being forced to switch to comcast cable internet as that is the only other real option at the location.

What is a good cable modem? I do need to be able to set it up as a wireless access point if possible for my wife and my laptops / gaming systems.

I don't do a lot of major downloading but I do use the internet ALOT and game alot. Is the "performance" package going to be adequate?

Thanks for your time,
RAD

The most popular modem would be the Moto Surfboard 6120. Then again, Comcast should provide one so you really don't need to buy your own.

You DON"T however want a modem/wireless router combo device as they are all crap. Just buy yourself a nice WiFi router and use the modem they provide.

I would rent from Comcast. Buying my own never paid off as they don't last long enough in my area.

Well, I think I would prefer to buy rather than rent. I see the moto 6120 costs about $80 to $100. I will probably buy it from the local BestBuy as they have it in store so I don't have to wait on shipping.

Can my current 2-Wire 2700hg-b dsl router server as a wireless hub or do I have to buy something else for that?

I have done a little reading suggesting that I can use it in "bridge" mode but I want to make sure.

I agree with everything that has been said here.

seriously man, the combo router/modem crap is so 2002, and I really question it when I see users with them, get with the times and buy a legitimate router

as far as "oh I can't rent thats below me", I pay the monthly service charge to Comcast and something like $1/month in equipment rental for the modem (and its the VoIP model)

to put that into perspective, I'd have to run their service for over 100 months (we're talking like 8.3 years) to make purchasing the modem worthwile, also if I provide my own modem I can't call them in a year or two and say "this crap is broken" or "I want a newer model" and get new hardware, they also won't support it as completely (if I have issues with my service, they can replace any component they've provided, for free, because thats how the contract is written (anything thats Comcast property or tech, is Comcast's responsibility, meaning modems, STBs, DVRs, existing wiring in the house (not their property per se, but its included if you have line repair), and any wiring INTO the house, stuff that isn't covered includes: routers, switches, client computers, client TVs, home theatre systems, etc)

as far as "will cable be enough", unless you have some ridiculous DSL where you're coming from (which I doubt, because DSL is usually overpriced for the bandwidth), you're probably looking at an upgrade from 3 or 6 mbit to 15 to 30 mbit cable, yeah, I'd say that'll be "enough"

The last 2 cable modems I've received in the past 5yrs were both free from the cable company. (was Comcast, now its TWC)
