Anyone else building a core 2 system on the cheap?

I currently have:

A64 3000+
2GB DDR400
36GB WB Raptor
X850 AIW


I was looking at picking up:

E6300
ASRock 775Dual-VSTA

So for under 300 bucks I could be up and running.

I am very happy with my system as it is except it's really slow at encoding media. I think this will give me the boost I was looking for.


What do you all think? Do you think it will cut my media encoding times by a good amount?
 
The whole reason I want this board is I can use my old ram and old video card.

Gives me a lot more life for a low price.
 
Definately if it's a multithreaded application it should drastically improve your encoding times. I wouldn't say cut them in half because you are still bottlenecked by the old DDR RAM etc. and you won't be able to overclock too well on that board, but it will be a huge difference. Also, multitasking will be a lot better.

I am looking to do a full system upgrade although sort of on a budget... I am looking at some cheaper DDR2, the DS3 mobo and an E6400. I can slowly shop around and try and get a Skythe Infinity cooler or if not that a Ninja once I save up a bit more money, and I'll be doing Raid 0 with two new drives.

The beauty of C2D is no matter what CPU you will be getting or what RAM, it will always be performing better than anything out there when overclocked just a tad!
