well dual cores are supposed to be released soon so I would wait for them.

what are you using the system for? You said sli so I will assume gaming. In which case dont bother waiting for dual cores, they will not give you a performance benefit.

In 3 months we should see R520 released and ATI AMR or whatever they are calling it, with G70 coming out a lil while afterwards, so the only thing you might want to wait on is the graphics cards, maybe get a 6600gt to hold you over until G70 then buy 2 7800GXT

just because he games doesnt mean he doesnt do tasks that do better with 2 cores...

true, that is exactly why the very first thing I said was "what will you be using the system for". And just because he will be doing something that will "benefit" from dual core does not mean that dual core is the choice for him. If he occasionally encodes some mp3s or a video or two, it is not worth the performance hit in gaming / price increase to get a dual core. It is a much smarter choice to get a single core.

i use my computer for more or less everything, mostlly gaming tho

will the 7800GXT be better then 6800U? seeing how its a GT.

and when will atis "sli" come out? i bet 2xR520 would beat 2x7800GXT by far.

and what about sli on widescreen monitors? maybe i shoul create another thread in the display forums.

thanks for all the answers :)

if you do alot of encoding I would go dual cores, whats nice about dual cores is you can play games and do other intensive stuff at the same time without much of a performance hit. For example, if you are going dual monitors you can game on one, and do other cool cpu intensive stuff on the other. :D Just depends on what you do like what Erasmus said :) also be aware, newer games coming out over the next year are going to have dual core support and will get a large boost in performance from dual cores. Unreal 3 is a good example. I would go dual core or a low end venice (3000+ or 3200+) and oc it (2.7 to 2.8GHz seems to be the average)and wait till dual core is more affordable developed etc.

ok, if memory serves, Nvidia and Ati refresh their respective video cards around June...
and it seems the Xbox 360 and other consoles' video cards indicate a major performance jump...
The dual cores are coming out...
Rumors are rampant about Ati coming out with a SLI equivalent...
So, if you can wait and see then do so - if not- get the highest stuff you can afford -
it seems most amd 939 sockets and the intel 955x chipset (Again if I am remembering, and I think there might be another chipset) are dual core compatible. (feel free to correct the intel info...)
If you game - go amd
if you do heavy multitasking - (surf while burning dvd & listening to music, etc.) look hard at the intel Hyperthreading now and dual cores soon...
