I was initially looking at a cheap laser printer because I don't print much and I end up spending $30 on an ink cartridge every few months. I've had the same inkjet printer for 4 years, and all I print is B&W text & graphics. I literally still have the same package of paper I bought with it and I've lost count as to how many cartridges I've bought.
The inkjet does a good job, but since I don't print much I'm wanting to go to a laser printer. I do print B&W graphics, such as this FAA approach chart. I've heard that laser printers don't print graphics very well. My inkjet will print up to 1200x1200dpi, but I print these at 600x600dpi and they look fine. Will they look the same printed on a laser printer at 600x600dpi?
I found one that's a printer/copier/scanner, and the scanner is color. In the specs it says:
Resolution(Optical): 600 x 600 dpi
Resolution (Enhanced): Max. 4,800 x 4,800 dpi
I do want to get a scanner to archive old photos, but 600x600 for a scanner these days isn't that great. What does the Enhanced 4800x4800dpi mean? Is that like the useless digital zoom on digital cameras. The copy function would be nice to have, so even if the scanner isn't good for scanning photos I may still get it, but I don't really have desk space for both a scanner and printer.
