Buying a HD4850

I'm going to get a 4850 so I can hopefully move into crossfire later, after I get a bigger monitor. I was browsing through newegg and came across this card:

For 120 AR that's hard to beat, but with money tight, especially with the economy how it is and the holiday season, I want to make sure that the cost actually comes out to be 120. Is Asus good with rebates? I had a somewhat unhappy experience with them a few years back. Are they any good nowadays?

Or is it a better deal to just go with the same card, except open box?

For me (living in CA = too much tax) it comes out to be $137.79 after shipping + tax. For the brand new card it's $160.86, minus the rebate $130.86. The only difference between open box and retail is it comes with no accessories, just the card, correct?

Just contemplating what I should do. Any advice?

Thanks!

Open box at the egg is good. I got a sapphire 4850 open box for $102 and it didn't come
with anything. You don't really need the driver cd / manual / or retail box. But I did need an HDMI adapter, but luckily a friend let me use his since he had no use for it.

I just ordered the exact same card (open box) this morning...

But my last card i bought open box was a 8800GTS and it came with everything surprisingly. Just kinda luck of the draw I guess.

So it's worth paying the extra 7 bucks to avoid dealing with the rebate?

Thanks!

The one with the rebate has free shipping as well. So it would be $120 total after rebate.

I just ordered the ASUS with the rebate.

Haven't had any rebate issues at all from any company in quite a while. Only one I had to deal with was a Circuit City one and even that got straightened out after a bit.

Tax in California (or SF at least) is 8.25%, which brings it up to 130 AR (10 in tax). Does ASUS provide reasonably-timed rebates or 6 month ones like I'm used to?

If you plan on going Crossfire later, you may want to consider the 1gb open-box card for $138.75.

512mb really isn't adequate for dual 4850s.

Unfortunately budget doesn't allow that for me right now. Now I have to think. 512 now or 1gb later...

Have you looked at going with something from the green side or no?

Might want to future proof yourself a little, especially if you go XF later on.

Just a little more and you'll have a 1GB frame buffer. That translates to a couple FPS more at 1680x1050 with all eye candy on than the 512MB one and at higher resolutions than that it can beat an HD 4870 512MB in some games. If you crossfire that 1GB frame buffer will be especially nice with the increased power.
