I am looking at replacing my laptop's hard drive (5400 rpm 1tb) with an SSD. I am also looking at adding an SSD to my desktop, to improve performance.

Point is this: There are different technologies in SSD (TLC, MLC, 3D Vertical, etc.) with different controllers. I know some are old tech, and some are new. But, what is the benefit/detriment of each? What would best fit, say, a work laptop, entertainment laptop, or gaming laptop? What would best benefit a home computer, workstation, or gaming desktop?

What is the lowest speed read/write, lifespan, and other features I should look for?

I know some models come with software allowing for the transfer of the OS, programs, apps, and data over from the original HD to the new SSD. But which ones? Do some have it available as a download?

So, here is what I hope for: Some sort of buyers guide, something for the newbie, and something for a tech reference for those who are knowledgeable.
 
One question at a time man. Most of these questions can be easily answered using search.

Point is, should we have a specific spot where the general info can be found, so that you DONT get peat and repeat threads?

Shouldn't there be a spot where anyone new, or looking for info, for SSD can just look?

Just buy the 850 Pro and call it a day......... We know what we are talking about. Or..... do you own research and then buy the drive you want to buy. It's not that complicated.

Agreed. You really can't go wrong with the 850 Pro.

To expand on that slightly, however....


For desktop, Intel 730 series (480GB version only) or any of the Samsung 850 Pro drives.
Laptop I'd go with 850 Pro as well.
Budget drives I'd consider would be BX100, MX200 or 850 EVO.

If you want to research it yourself, start by going to anandtech and reading the last several SSD reviews.
 
Just to follow up and expand on my previous post recommending the 850 Pro. It checks every box worth checking from power savings through high queue depth performance. Backed by a company that's not going anywhere. It comes with a quality management utility and an optional but free RAM caching feature. The internal components and firmware are created in house.
There are lots of other SSDs out there that work good but none do it as good as an 850 Pro. Sandisk Extreme Pro, Extreme II , and Intel 730 are comparable in performance but give something up in a management utility or power consumption.
