i only have pc3200c2 to work with so i was thinking either a 2.8C or a 3.0C with the 5/4 or go with a 2.4a or 2.8a and run 1/1 or wait.... is there gonna be anything better for socket 478?

3.0C...some of the newer ones have no problems getting 250FSB with just a little voltage increase. That would give you 3.75 ghz at 5:4

why im not gonna upgrade to socket 775, but is there gonna be a severe drop in price? or will something else better come out for 478 after 775 hits?

could wait for the new prescott steppings to come out for the 3.0 series. But if you really wanna buy now, get the 3.0c that should do just fine.. Speaking of that, im selling one right now on the forums if your interested. I got it to 240FSB rock stable, but its not high enough for me lol.

I've gotten mine to 3.42GHz on air with ram that isn't exactly overclockers ram. I would buy better ram and go up past that, but I'd rather spend the money on LGA775 chips and PCI-Express W/DDR2.

Yes I am an early adopter of technology.

DDR2 is currently sitting at $330 for a 512mb Stick of 533mhz with 4-4-4-4 timings

Stick with ddr1 for the time being- until ddr2 shines

I'd wait on DDR2, but if you want to go ahead and get a proc the Northwood's are good solid chips..I'm looking forward to the new stuff though.

well, new tech always gets better with time, nothing ever comes out perfect the first time...well im sure theres exceptions but save that for another conversation.

If you want one now, then get the 3.0C northwood, if you got the cash then go for the 3.4 or 3.2 flavor. If you wanna wait a bit for the new prescott steppings and even 4.0ghz, you got that option. As for the new sockets and DDR....well, unless your a hardcore early adopter, they may not be right for you.

The system you build with components now should last you a good while (unless your a gamer or other hardware intensive app) until the socket 775, 439 and ddr 2, pci E etc has matured further AND gotten cheaper.

so is the D1 stepping gonna be all that? 4ghz?? i heard intel wont go past 3.4 for the socket 478

Personally, I think I would wait until the end of this year. Rumor on the street is that Intel's gonna release a 925XE chipset with a 1GHz+ FSB. That's what I personnaly plan on getting.

instead of buying a new cpu why not a new graphics card. if you get a 3.0 and o/c it to 3.4 or so, your only gaining 400-500mhz, im not trying to say thats not alot but from the looks of your 3dmarks score of less than 2000 a nice radeon 9800pro, or something would take that score alot higher, youd spend about the same amount on the video card as you would the newer p4. since your ram is only running at ddr333, can you lower the latencis any more than they are, with some more volts?

We are likl 4 days away from the launch of the CPU it won be long and will be worth waiting for
It is about damn time. I have been waiting for this for about a year. They keep on pushing it back dammit.

I am waiting to get a 915. Earlier they said that the 915 would support DDR DRAM and the 925 would support DDR DRAM2 so I hope that is still true. From what Xbit says, it looks like the latest is that both will only support DDR DRAM 2 and that scares me because the DDR DRAM 2 costs too much and I can't upgrade to it.

i plan on grabbing a 6800GT as soon as i can and know that i need a good CPU to keep up say 3.6 or so with some OCin ;) im leaning towards a 3.0C d1

I think by November once socket 775 is out that all socket 478 processors will drop in price tremendously. I saw a roadmap that had 3.2 and 3.4 processors, both Prescotts and Northwoods, at about $180 and $230, respectively in November

I say bullshit,

i'm reciving in a few hours a 915 chipset board with DDR1 slots in it :D
