Yeah that's right I'm new to burning DVDs.

I download an AVI movie, convert it to MPEG2, burn it to DVDR using NERO.

When testing it out, it works on my PS3 smoothly, it works on my PC smoothly, but when I put it in my DVD player in the living room, it is blotchy, pixellated, skippy, and the sound crackles.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is it time for a newer DVD player (this one is over 7 years old).

many home DVD players are not fond of DVDR. I'd try some regular non-rewritable disks

ok, my suggestion is to burn the DVD at the absolute slowest speed support by your burner, which is most likely 4x. The reason for this is many times DVD players have inferior lasers compared to the other systems you mentioned. So burn at 4x and your problems should clear up.
