I've finally convinced my parents that I need a new computer after having a AMD T-Bird @ 1.0 Ghz for the past 4 years.

As of right now I'm contemplating on building a system with the following specs:

AMD 64 Venice 3000+
512 x 2 Corsair XMS TWINX1024-3200C2PT
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D

I have my old case and old power supply (400w). Additionally, I have optical drives (NEC ND-1300 and a 16X DVD drive), monitor (Dell 1905FP), speakers (Logitech Z5300), mouse/keyboard (Logitech MX Duo), and some extra 30 CFM fans.

So far, I have a budget of $400 or so to get the parts I need which include a processor, motherboard, memory, and possibily a graphics card. I am going to run with Onboard graphics for a while because parents aren't willing to dish out money for that.

I am planning to overclock this computer to get the MAX performance for the money. Is the configuration good?

Would be better off with OCZ VX memory on the DFI motherboard because it can handle higher voltages.

Also, a 24-pin ATX12V2.0 power supply is recommended for that motherboard. It's not required, but recommended if you want the best performance and overclock from it.

BTW, that motherboard does not have onboard video. The only K8 motherboards that do are the ATI chipset motherboards I believe.

This is a configuration I'm thinking off as of right now:

Overclocking
AMD 3000+ Venice - $154
DFI NF4 Ultra-D - $85
POWMAX ATX 580W PSU - $34
Corsair XMS 1 GB (512 x 2) TWINX1024 -3200C2PT - $115
OCZ Peroformance 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 433 (PC 3500) - $136
OR
GeIL Platinum 512MB (2 x 256MB) DDR 500 (PC 4000) - $69
OR
GeIL Ultra 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 500 (PC 4000) - $133
Thermalright XP120 + Enermax 120 mm - $45-50
Total: XMS - $433/ OCZ - $459/ GeIL 512 MB - $392/GeIL GB - $456

Not Overclocking
AMD 3000+ Venice - $154
MSI RS480M2-IL - $86
POWMAX ATX 580W PSU - $34
Corsair Value 1 GB (512 x 2) - $81
Total: $355

Based on the updated configuration above:

Which memory is the best for overclocking?
- Corsair XMS 1 GB (512 x 2) TWINX1024 -3200C2PT
- OCZ Peroformance 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 433 (PC 3500)
- GeIL Platinum 512MB (2 x 256MB) DDR 500 (PC 4000)
- GeIL Ultra 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 500 (PC 4000)

Are there others which are better than this below $150?

Is the PSU (POWMAX ATX 580W) any good?

How good is the motherboard (MSI RS480M2-IL) good?

negative the 24 pin is required. and 480watts. look at twimos sp that seems to be popular ram around here.

Oh god no.... DO NOT STEP ANYWHERE NEAR THAT POWMAX PSU.

Seriously, if you value your computer, you will not get that powmax psu, if you want a good reliable yet affordable psu get a fortron source one. You can look in the PSU section for good advice on psu's. Basically you could save yourself the trouble and stick a time bomb in your computer instead of getting the powmax.

If you can rob a local convenience store, then the 150-300$ from that can get you a video card.

150-180 for a 6600gt, 300ish or less for an x800xl. Both should make you very happy.

And omfg, that dfi is only 85$ time to ditch my gigabyte mobo :D
