building computer for friend

I take it budget isn't much of a problem, and it's a gaming machine?

1. Consider dropping the CPU down 1 notch, that'll probably save a lot of money for no noticable speed difference.

2. The bottleneck of that system is definitely the hard drive. I'd toss a raptor (or two in RAID) in there to help games, apps and windows load faster. Use the big drive as a data drive or for apps you rarely use.

Otherwise, that's definitely a kickass system.

Since you are getting a SLI motherboard, you would be doing your friend a disservice with the listed Antec. A matched choice would be something along the lines of the Seasonic S12-500.

I agree with most of what Sandman has stated with the exception of the Raid configuration. The leading school of thought pertaining to Raid in a desktop configuration is that a 74GB Raptor and larger storage drive yeilds a fast storage system with significantly less headaches. Drop the CPU one notch; good advice.

Good luck.

I would sugggest looking into a 3000+ Venice core a couple reviews have shown the venice 3000+ running head to head with the 4000+ when overclocked. So save like 275 on a processor and get some better ram... I would also reccommend looking for a better price on the dual 6800GT's you should be able to knock off at least another 100 dollars by getting a different brand... and with the money you saved get the raptors or use it towards a bad ass monitor such as a dell 2405fpw...

Just my 2 cents

not a bad build at all.

i would advise against buying OCZ, as they are an ethically flawed company

i agree with the previous recommendations; does your friend plan to OC? game heavily?

or even better yet, not to mention a bit cheaper (on both price & shipping): Enermax EG651P-VE

this one supports up to 36A on all three voltage rails (3.3v, 5v, & 12v) vs. 30A/30A/17A+16A (3.3v/5v/12v1+12v2, respectively) on the Seasonic. the smaller fans in the power supply will most likely not be audible over the HSF/chipset/2x vid card fans anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem.

unless i find something that totally blows this thing out of the water, i'll personally stick with Enermax PSU's. i've had nothing but good luck with both of mine, after 2+ years.

thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
