Hey, I'm building the computer you see in the specs below. I believe that everything is attached correctly, all the power cords, components, etc. I believe this, but when I try to boot up the computer by turning the switch on... It makes a short "WEEEEEE" sound... kind of like the sound an injured cat makes. It's very high pitched, the fans turn on for -just a second- and the green light on the front shows for -just a second-. Like its trying to boot but cant. We tried 3-4 times and everytime it still did that. We're assuming that somethings not hooked in right, so we're asking you.

That's an easy one! :)

You have not properly connected the fan on top of the CPU's heatsink to the proper fan header. The BIOS is shutting the system down to prevent thermal damage to the CPU.

Be sure you have a speed sensing fan plugged into the CPU_FAN header and things should work just fine.

hmmm which wire is that? can u give me an idea of the color of the wire im looking for?

Well buddy... I flipped through my motherboard, processor, and case instruction manuals and I still dont know what wire your refering to... can I have an idea? :)

It is not a wire...

it is what we call a fan header.

It is a three pronged connector near the CPU socket marked CPU_FAN (usually a white socket).

How have you pwered the CPU fan now??? Is it plugged into the motherboard or directly into the power supply?

And, if you got a boxed AMD CPU, full instructions (big assed pictures!!!) are in the instruction manual that came with the CPU. Just open it all the way up (it unfolds like a poster).

It will show you what the CPU fan header looks like.

yeah, that three pronged thing is already hooked up to my motherboard. i actually had a professional guy hook up my processor and heatsink/fan.

i doubt there is any problem with the processor/heatsink.

There are several fan headers on the motherboard.

BE SURE that the one you have plugged the fan for the CPU says CPU_FAN beside it.

also, the fan should have a 3 wire connector on it (usually a black, red and yellow wires).

Yep, its plugged in right.

I tried starting it again, and it did nothing at all.

I'm taking it tommorow... to a really professional guy. So I should be able to figure out whats wrong then.

okay... well, good luck!

I am sure it is something easy.

Oh, one thing...

You do know that the video card MUST have power directly from the power supply, right? I have heard that the 6800GT's make a hell of a noise if the power isn't plugged in. I haven't heard if they don't allow the computer to boot.

Might look at that too. :)

I can verify that the 6800GT DOES make a hell of a noise! furthermore, the computer will not post at least in my experience, if the power is not connected to the video card.

lol that's actually it! the reason why that "WWEEEE" noise happened is because the 6800GT wasnt plugged in. I plugged it back in and there was no sound. There was nothing at all happening when I tried to boot up the computer, so I'm gonna have to wait till tommorow.

Well... at least that is one issue you can don't have to worry about.
