How about telling us what you want to do with the computer, what kind of budget you're talking about, and we'll help you pick the parts?

i am not buying a comp just wanted to know a site that tells me how to put it together and what parts to pick

Putting it together is easy. These days, parts won't fit where they don't go. If you have to force something, you know you're doing it wrong. Just in case, everything comes with a manual.

Now picking parts, that's another matter entirely. Other than simple compatibiliy issues (i.e. don't buy an Athlon64 with a Socket478 motherboard), it all comes down to what you want to do with them. Web browsing and word processing? Gaming? Home theatre? Animation? Audio/video mastering? Programming and compiling? File serving? Web serving? Game serving? LAN parties?

what parts you pick depends on what you want to do with the computer and how much you want to spend with a ton of other variables(brand loyalty, noise, etc...) For example, if you're just web browsing a sempron 2400+ with 512MB of ram is more than enough but if you want to play HL2 at max resolution you might want an athlon 64 with an X800 (or whatever is the best, I haven't been paying attention recently) and 1 GB of low latency ram.

there is no BEST computer set up. so say what you want to do with the computer, set a price limit and maybe some preferences you have and you'll get a bunch of helpful replies from the [H] community.

some basic things to think about:

price?
case? (full tower, mid tower, small form factor...)
how often do you game? will that justify spending $600 on a video card?
when will you upgrade next?

but definitely price and what you're going to use it for.

i like to im and surf the net and play lots of games and i dont wanna spend more than $1000

but b4 i can get the stuff i still dont what is compactible with what and i dont want to spend money on something i wouldnt be able to use.

What?? Use a bigger hammer!!! :D

The Ultimate,
You should pick up the PC Building Bible by PC Gamer, its a annual magazine type thingy. Its pretty helpful if you dont know anything. Find a big book store with a good sized magazine rack, look for it there, among other mags. Also like stated above. Just ask what you wanna know. Somebody here knows the answer.

whats SLI???

and can a 939 socket mobo only support a 939 socket CPU or can it also support a 754 socket CPU??

also what is better AGP or PCI-E (and which is better for future upgrades)???

939s will accept only 939 cpus not 754, same goes for the 754.

atm I believe AGP and PCI-E are about the same as the extra bandwidth offered by the PCI-E is not being used though I'm sure I'm about to be corrected. but PCI-E is the way to go as AGP will begin to be phased out soon.

SLI is a new technology featured by NVidia
Using a special SLI motherboard, you can essentially have 2 videocards running at same time, giving you about an 80% performance boost over the power of just one. For you, It's a good possibility due to this scenerio:

You buy a decent video card now for your system, plays games good and all at decent res's. A year or 2 from now the card is getting old and can't handle the newest games too well. Rather than ditching the card for another super expensive card, you can get a second card and put it in the second slot. The second card must be same as original, but by this time it'll be a dirt cheap option for an 80% performance increase.

SLI is also used by hardcore people to run full settings and benching purposes to get max performance available, but that's out of your pricerange

Hope that helps ;)

sure I had to go looking for that link and then look what happens, n64 beats me to the point, but 80 percent may be the right number, I guess it depends who you ask o and another note, i believe that one 6800 GT outperformed two 6600's in SLI, so just to make not of, but again, i could be wrong.
