A friend who is still playing CS on his laptop for years now is wanting to finally upgrade. He wants the solid PC, but it doesn't have to be a Crysis-killer (that'll be the day, lol). I would use NewEgg but sadly he lives in Canada so he is going to use BestDirect.ca I am told. NewEgg.ca has some jacked up prices.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Around $1000 US but give or take some. Also figuring in the fact that parts will be more expensive in CA so we have some breathing room. (He can spend up to about $1500 CA but he wants to keep it as low as possible)

3) Where do you live?
Buyer lives in Canada :(

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Everything is needed besides the peripherals. :p So Case, CPU, Motherboard, GPU, RAM, Hard Drives, Optical Drive, etc

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Nope, no parts are being re-used.

6) Will you be overclocking?
Doubtful for right now.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
He will be purchasing a 24" monitor soon separately.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
As soon as possible

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.

Nothing special. No need for SLi or Crossfire.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
We have a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit key

I think he just wants a solid computer that will last him a while. He wants to branch out beyond Counter-Strike into the other realms of PC gaming, lol. I'm thinking a 5850 possibly as the graphics card? Thanks in advance for the help. :)

Go with NCIX.

Find the lowest prices here and use price matching. NCIX will price match anything.

What monitor is he using now?

No idea but I figure that is irrelevant since he will be purchasing a new one very soon.

... and how soon will he be buying the 24" monitor?

He told me that he will be picking up a 24" monitor on Boxing Day if he finds a good deal. Otherwise he will just order one online or something of the like. So around a month away.

"Soon" is variable, so I asked my question.

Now see, boxing day, to me, is the day of a big fight... lol. And as far as I know, the Mayweather Pacquiao fight isn't set yet. :p So... I Googled it. For the peeps in the states that don't know, its Dec. 26th, according to Google.

Of course, I did not mean any disrespect by my answer. Sorry for my assumption about Boxing Day. I have known about it since I was a kid (which is well before my friend moved to Canada) so I made the assumption most people here in the States knew (and I'm from Florida, the farthest state south :p).

HD has you on the right track. Switch that 500GB to a faster Samsung F3 instead of a WD, though.

No time to learn about such stuff in LA... too busy cutting people off and dodging those stray drive-by bullets while texting your friend about the latest tweet from someone famous and updating your status on fb on your way to Fry's to pickup the latest deal. :p

I thought I had responded to hoss already, oops! Thanks for that build. He'd rather stick with Intel and possibly go for the new Core i5. I do think I will use some of the parts you recommended. :)

Here's what I came up with. If we can get NCIX to price match all of this then we'll be set.

Core i5 750 - $199

Gigabyte P55 UD3P - $169

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 - $98.99

COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP $74.99 + fs

For the GPU I wanted to get the ASUS 5850 or the XFX 5850. Just waiting for it to get in stock somewhere :p (seen them around $320)

Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - $101

Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA - $32.49

Corsair TX750W - $115

Estimated price is about $1111. Thoughts or recommendations?

Better PSUs for similar $ (M12D or HX750).

How are MSI cards? I've heard rave reviews about the ASUS and XFX cards. I've also had really good experience with XFX in the past.

I'm also kind of addicted to Corsair PSU's after absolutely great experiences with their products. :p I haven't heard much on Antec PSU's before.

Better PSUs for similar $ (M12D or HX750).

Think they're worth like the extra $20? Corsair 750HX

Edit: Thought I might also add in this. Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - $23

The HX is a step up tier compared to the TX. HX is also partially modular.

Nothing special about MSI. IIRC, Asus only has a 3yr warranty, right? XFX and VisionTek are the only ATI partners with lifetime, I believe.

Antec has some good PSUs, as they use some of the same OEM's as Corsair (Seasonic and CWT). The Earthwatts is cheaper because its more of an entry-level high end PSU. Antec's higher end lines are the TruePower New, Neo ECO, and Signature Series.

If you want modular cables, then sure, go for it.

However, 750W is overkill for your needs. Drop it down to a 650W instead, which is still more than enough...
$108 - Antec TP New 650W TP-650 Semi Modular 80+ Certified

I may go with a TX650 as the HX version is about $40 more. I've used the TX650 in a friend's rig and everything worked out nicely with the wiring, etc so I don't think we'll go with modular this time. I can get the TX650 for $90.

Thanks again for the help everyone! Does everything look good to go? Any other recommendations?

final list?

Core i5 750 - $199

Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA - $32.49

Corsair TX650W - $88

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - $23 (Not sure about this, just a maybe since I doubt he'll be overclocking (at least for a while))

When it comes to the 5850, I want to try for a XFX or ASUS version if I can but I may end up going with that MSI one. Figure about $350 or so. I can get a XFX Black Edition for $377 at NewEgg.ca. What sucks is that its just so difficult to find the best prices on these things...so many different versions. NewEgg has these 3 in stock, http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produc...PA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=5850&x=0&y=0 That XFX Double Lifetime Warranty is darn good.

Estimated around $1115-$1145 total. Thoughts?

Looks fine to me. The only reason to get XFX over Asus is the lifetime warranty. Don't pay more for stock OC'ing, not worth it, IMO -- OC the card yourself if you want a faster GPU.

Yeah, I would take an ASUS over the XFX if I could find one in stock and cheaper. It is unfortunate that I can only find the XFX Black Edition in stock so I'm almost stuck with going for the OC right now unless I were to wait.

I have noticed that the xfx ati cards have not been as well made as their nvidia cards. By this I mean lower user ratings. The Asus cards seem to have higher overall quality than xfx. As for the warranty of 3 yrs vs. double lifetime, in 3 years this card will be outdated anyway. I must also say that the Asus SmartDoctor software that comes with the card is great, full overclocking and fan control.

I'm curious as where the majority of the "lower user ratings" for the XFX ATI cards are coming from. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I'm somewhat surprised that XFX is considered by many to be worse than Asus.

I would never buy an Asus over an XFX or EVGA.

Asus and XFX use the same GPUs -- keep in mind that EVGA is an NVIDIA-only product line -- so they often offer similar performance to each other. The only differences between the two brands are really warranty length (which is irrelevant if you don't bother to register the card as soon as you get it) and customer service.
