Along the same lines as the thread about PSU effiecency...... What is the cheapest and most reliable PSU out there?

I've been tossing around the idea of setting up a small farm (albeit VERY small... 1... 2 blades (with room to expand, of course)...)... and I don't really want to throw $60-80 a blade of a PSU.... so a cheap, reliable power source would be great... Any ideas?

I like to use the allied 400 and 450 psu's. They are kinda middle of the road, but they work on my duallies and my oc'd boxen with no problems.

This might sound really funny, but the general rule is the heavier, the better. :) Okay, you can stop laughing now! There also use to be another comparison found at a not-too-well-loved-but-very-snotty alternate hardware "review" site (run by Tom) that followed this same reasoning. :p You can go to a known-good power supply like an Antec or the like and see how much a comparable model should weigh, then try to keep that in mind as you continue to look around.

Most people seem to have really good luck with Powerman, Sparkle, and Fortron though (all made by the same company).

Good Luck!

How low will you go ?
How long will you wait ?
What are your skills to innovate ?

I'm a bottom feeder - and I wait for the good stuff to drop,
Examples:
Free scanner (good) 2 years ago
120GB hard drive over a year ago for $10
5 port switches, free after rebate.
AMD 2600 plus m/b and fan for $80, a few months ago.

That said - a bad PSU can fry the whole system. It's like buying "seconds" ok with frisbees, not with condoms.

How low - Set your sights on a name brand with good reviews,
Wait - Check out hot deal forums for when they go on sale, have rebates etc., don't pass up a "case PSU combo", especially if they throw in free shipping. My last Antec case/PSU combo from the egg gave free shipping and the total cost was about what the PSU would have cost by itself.

Innovate - Farmer, blades, get a good PSU and run two or more boards off of it.

Doesn't anyone have any specific models that they've used? I was wondering the same thing as OSUguy98. I'm going to build another AthlonXP machine or two just to fold and would like a low power draw PSU to go with it since it won't be powering more than a CPU, HD and CD.

I think the PSU is not the place to be cheap, it can fry every cheap spare part or expensive leftover you put in it, especially for a box that may be runing 24/7.

I'd say for a better price Fortron or for a little more defenitely Antec good prices over at newegg.
