I have a Thermaltake 560W runnning all the stuff listed in my sig. It doesn't appear to be underpowering and the computers never crashed or done anything weird. Its been running it for about 2-3 months but there is an odd crackling and humming sound coming form it. Its not really loud but its a little unnerving. You guys think I should worry?

If the crackling noise sounds like electricity arcing, then it is definitely not good. I don't see why it would just start making the noise after 2-3 months, unless something is giving way. Personally, I don't trust Thermaltake psus.

Just my 2 cents...

Thats what it sounds like to me. Its running a we bit hotter than usual but i don't smell burning or anything. Its really weird I'm not sure what to make of it i wanted new ram before a new psu : ( . Ah but i guess thats how it is with computers.

Ahh, yeah. I feel for you. I once heard a similar crackling noise from the psu in a box I built for my dad. It was quite scary really. I simply took out the Radeon 8500 I had in there and downgraded him to a Geforce 2 :( MX card and the crackling noise disappeared. So, I take it the 8500 was just a bit too much for that psu. Unless the psu prefers nvidia :p

I doubt your psu is getting overworked though. How many amps are on your 12V rail?

EDIT: Yes, it could be the fans. Hard to say. Try stopping the fans and see it the noise disappears.

22 amps on the 12. It could be underpowred and its to stubborn to show signs. Those 7800s are pretty power hungry. I will try that fan idea, thanks. If it doesn't stop I guess I have to dish out the money for a new one because that sound is scaring the hell out of me.

Yeah, 22 amps on the 12 line is low. My 400 watt psu has dual 12V rails, one at 10 amps, the other at 15 for a total of 25. I'm pretty sure my psu would be on the weak side for your system. :(

EDIT: I noticed in one of the psu stickys that a 7800GTX requires a psu with at least 26A on the 12V line, so I'm guessing that a 7800GT would be close to that.

Well it was the fan. Well it seems to be doing good its not getting to hot and its handeling the oc on the 7800 and the cpu. If I clock higher and the psu blow you think there a chance it would take some parts with it?

If the psu blows, then yeah, it may take parts with it. Check your voltages: if they are +/- 5% of spec then you should be ok.

Good to hear the noise is gone. :)

This is a decent example of why every month or so its good to spend a few short minutes a pc maintenance and cleaning. Just simple stuff like dust/lint cleaning and checking for loose capicitors and wires. You mentioned this has been going on for several months. In this case thankfully the problem was benign but it severes as a good notice to us all not to ignore or take lightly strange noises from our pc's.
