Bowed base?

I keep hearing this "bowed base" term thrown around on here and other watercooling sites when refering to waterblocks. Anybody want to explain it to me?
 
A bowed base is a curved base made to accomodate the uneven IHS by having the middle part further down than the corners.


 
The danger here is that when Intel decides to fix their IHS you will be screwed as the water blocks can't be easily returned to flat condition without milling them. However, for the time being it seems to work. Caveat Emptor :D

Yep. Bowing basically bends the base to make it convex. This helps to take advantage of certain manufacturing or other issues with how the IHS is bonded to the die. Once a blocks base is bowed it is, for all intents and purposes, permanent.

I am not sure whether or not this is something inherently wrong with the IHS on Intel CPU's, or if it just takes advantage of the way the IHS is made. There certainly isn't a problem with cooling, so I don't see Intel changing anything any time soon. I am also not too sure how much bowing helps AMD processors or older Intels.
 
your choices for a bowed base are basically twofold:

1.) bow the base of the block, and pray Intel never really learns the meaning of the word flat, and thus have a block that will be in use for a few CPUs to come

2.) lap the base of the block, and the IHS to get better thermal transfer between to two (voiding the CPU warranty).

I vote lapping...but that's partially because it involves more work, more risk, and more patience. YOU BETTER EARN THAT OC!

See I don't think there is really anything wrong with Intel's IHS. For what it is designed for it works just fine. It isn't designed to be the end all and be all of thermal performance. It is designed to protect the core and help spread out the heat (duh). It does that just fine for retail applications.
