After posting a heavy fourth quarter loss, Borders will be closing half its Waldenbooks stores, selling off all its overseas stores and starting its own website instead of selling books through Amazon.

The Borders Group, one of the nation's largest book retailers, announced a new strategic plan Thursday to close nearly half of its Waldenbooks stores, sell off or franchise most of its 73 overseas superstores, sever its relationship with Amazon.com and start its own online retail site.

All of the Waldenbooks around here are small ass shops in malls and whatnot. Don't know if anyone will miss them. I just hope they keep the Borders near me open for some time. Great store.

The amazon thing sucks though. Pretty much borders lost me as an online customer. Almost any dvd, book, game, whatever I order from amazon. The prices are almost always good and it is just so easy and fast to order. Plus I love the recomendation list when I go back to the site. They have gotten me for a few hundred bucks worth of stuff with it.

Waldenbooks was the library at Alexandria to me when I was a kid, since it always seemed to have the Choose Your Own Adventure books I couldn't find elsewhere.

Books are pretty old school, you'd be hard pressed to even find a book around here. When my future kids are my age they will only see them in antique stores, but they won't because they would never go into antique stores, because i will teach them that is a total scam to pay more for a hundred year old item than people would have paid for it when it was new.

Borders are going to have a tough time trying to do their own amazon. I think amazon did more good than harm to them... thats the only place I buy books from.

Also, I've always wondered how a company can expand so quickly selling books, well this is no real suprise.

Waldenbooks was always a lousy chain, even in Ye Olde Days when it was them vs. B. Dalton and Crown Books. Small stores, poor selection and crappy stocking. Good riddance!

Those books rocked!

I read alot and I used to like Waldenbooks. In fact thats where I got my start in book shopping for SciFi/Fantasy themed books (read: cheap trashy entertainemnt that keeps me entertained on planes and during boring odd hours).

Mind you, the Waldenbooks chain was well established before Borders began its expansion campaing back in the early 90s. Nowadays, I cant say I blame them. Plus with Borders Express I was wondering what the point of Waldenbooks was in terms of the Borders group.

Re: being small and in malls, thats the whole strategy of Waldenbooks; the idea was to capture passerbys interest and sell em a quick book to read. It worked well in the 80s, but the book megastores of the 90s (Borders and Barnes and Noble) made it obsolete.

I feel sorry for your future children.

I hope someone who values reading becomes their hero in childhood; I'm assuming that person won't be you.
