Well I tried BOINC a couple years ago but had trouble getting it to run on some lower end NVidia cards I had at the time, then the PC got repurposed, I moved away etc. Now after reading a post in the Formula BOINC thread I realized I have a 5 yr old HP laptop with accelerator currently sitting and doing nothing so I downloaded the latest BOINC and started QCN on it. Oh and of course I joined HardOCP. It ain't much but ... Lets go ! :D

Glad to have you back. You should also attach to WUProp as it is also a non-CPU intensive app.

Thx G. I'll look up WUProp in a bit. Definitely gotta be non-intensive as the AMD CPU in this laptop is a heater once its pushed. GPU is only HD4650 so I'm not sure its worth pointing at anything?

Welcome back, Toconator!

My old HP laptop I'm using for QCN is the same. I only run QCN and WUProp on it because anything that uses the CPU much at all causes it to overheat. You have nothing to worry about running just those two projects on your laptop - neither one uses more than a couple percent of CPU time and that's at most.

Ya, QCN wasn't even warm. Couldn't find WUProp in the Manager list of projects but I resurrected my old SETI account and started that. Running a bit warm now but not overly so. Not that interested in finding E.T. Would rather donate to more worthy causes. What is WUProp and where do I find it?

Glad you asked. My handy dandy All Inclusive DC Project list of course http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1801908 :D

I would also recommend using the BOINCStats account manager known as BAM!. It is a lot easier to attach devices to most projects than doing it manually. Also, it is up to projects to contact Berkeley to get on the list in the manager and most people familiar with BOINC really don't care.

WUProp is a project that just monitors other projects. It collects usage data like run times, CPU/GPU type, Ram usage, etc... Then you can use their results to kind of compare or to plan based on your system when you start looking at other projects.

Two thumbs up for the All Inclusive DC Projects list! I use it as a reference all the time. It's a great resource!

Ditto. Thx for the linkage G. WUProp didn't show up in the BAM Mgr but the info is on the WUProp page, easy cut and paste.

Odd.. are you looking to add it via BAM by clicking on the Sign-up for projects link? You have to tell BAM! to create the account if you don't have one yet. If you already have one, you can tell it to find your account from that same link. Once you have done that, you can just attach by clicking on either My Projects or My Host lists.

Also, just a fair warning, QCN doesn't award points daily. They have to run a script manually and I don't recall if it is weekly or what. So be patient. The project is also no longer being supported/developed and is mostly on auto pilot. So, it either works or it doesn't at this point. The admin only checks in to see if it needs restarted and such now as everyone has moved on to other projects and funding has pretty well dried up. No desire to get funding seems to exist either.

Ah, was wondering why no activity yet. Nothing on WUProp yet either but I only added it this morning. Was easy from Manager : tools/add project then paste in the link. On another note SETI is crunching away happily. Already have as much credit in one day as I had in a year on old classic SETI. Wouldn't mind switching it to the GPU but I installed BOINC as a service 'cause I only intended to see if I could get it going with a small project or two. Guess I'll have to reinstall to switch modes like FAH...

Yeah.. if you just uninstall and reinstall, it should still have all of your data directory still intact. So, it would be a quick redo. Keep in mind that SETI can take a long time for some results to validate and their scoring isn't so great as last I knew they were still supporting Credit New (crap scoring system).
