Blu Ray causing Windows StartUp Hang

Hey guys.
Bought a slotloading bluray drive (hp laptop drive in a 5.25 bracket - default W7 drivers) for my desktop and when there is a bluray left in it it causes a startup hang. Black screen, can move the mouse. Just post the windows 7 splash screen. Thus, it is obviously *not* a boot priority error.

First time it happened was after putting in my first bluray and going to my computer where I had an explorer crash. Rebooted to find the startup hang. I since found the problem fixed itself provided the bluray drive wasn't plugged in.

It randomly booted up fine with the drive in at one point after a restart.
It happened to be just after I made an "eject" exe however I think that was a coincidence. Then we tried watching a bluray which worked for 3/4 of a movie then crashed to the point where I had to restart my computer which, surprise surpise! Didn't boot into windows 7 properly -_____-

I tried making the eject exe run on startup but it doesn't get that far into windows 7

Even trying to eject the disk in safe mode caused explorer to crash.

Now I have a rented bluray stuck in a slotload drive (without an eject button) causing my computer to not boot.

I have heard W7 has had problems with blurays left in drives and trying to boot and that there was a hotfix released.
I tried it and it said that: "This update is not applicable with your system". I haven't been able to try applying the update with the player plugged in because I can't boot with it.

Very puzzled.
Thank you for reading and please share any ideas.

Edit: Tried a completely different bluray drive (samsung standard 5.25 size bluray drive) with the same result. Difference is with the drive I'm using there is no eject button.
So I have come to the conclusion of it being a problem with W7 and booting with a bluray disk in and not a problem with the player.

slot bluray drive, now that's exotic

try to find the manufacturer's driver, search for HP laptops that has that drive and download those drivers. Avoid W7 default drivers

Yeah, it looks sexy as. Now if it only worked :p. Yeah, drivers were my next port of call.
I assume both drives I tried were on vanilla drivers. Tbh in the past I have never bothered with optical drive drivers because stock drivers worked fine. Clearly these drivers however might be not so good.

Only problem: Can I install the drivers without the drive attached? Otherwise I could try manually removing the disk to make the drive work long enough to test the drivers.

It would be easier to update the drivers with the bluray installed, but I guess you could update the drivers without the drive

control panel -> system -> device manager -> check your DVD/CD-ROM drives, see if the default bluray driver is active, and update it with the new driver or go to Action menu and add legacy hardware (but personally I haven't tried this legacy stuff, but it should work)

Hmmmm, I managed to eject the disk in safemode and from there the pc booted up fine.
I can't seem to find a driver for it online though. Device manager says "hp BDDVDRW CA21N ATA Device" at ver:6.1.7601.17514

Edit: I think I already have the only driver there is for it. Auto installed by W7

Also check for any new firmware releases for that drive. I haven't had any driver issues with BD drives, but there sure are a lot of firmware updates for them. I also haven't seen an optical drive without an emergency eject pinhole in a VERY long time. Are you sure you're just not seeing it? What model drive is it?

It's a HP CA21N

I'm not really sure how to check the firmware to be honest.
I'm not sure how to flash it either.

The only website which lists a download for it is burners.burn4free.com and that just has a link to the hp drivers page where I cant find any software to download. It might have an emergency eject but regardless it is easier to boot into safe mode and eject rather than remove the front bezel.
Thanks for the info anyways.
Any further insight or ideas are appreciated.
Cheers!

Well, there are sites that have a firmaware database from different manufacturers
like this one http://files.rpc1.org/

You download the file and flash your optical drive, similar to a bios.

Still, you can probably get more insights in the Optical & Backup Drives subforum
there is a sticky about this subject, or you can also start a new thread

Eh, no luck for my drive.
Thanks for all your help!

I might just leave it it and make sure to eject my blu-rays before shutting down/restarting.

I don't watch them that frequently so it shouldn't be a problem. It's a minor issue and safemode is a temporary fix if I do get one stuck in there. It's a flawless DVD drive as well.

Here it is anyway:
