Well, well…this is certainly an interesting development. I know you can’t believe everything you read on the intarweb but has Blu-ray been hacked already?

We haven't broken down the minutes and seconds or anything, but we're fairly certain that July 10th wasn't exactly ten years ago. Nevertheless, the so-called "impenetrable" BD+ DRM scheme has reportedly already been subverted.

As ridiculous as it sounds, it could actually help Sony. Well, that is if movie studios don't jump over to the other format. When people are able to get shit for free, then they'll buy the blu-ray player. I don't really give a shit either way, I just think Sony's arrogance is hilarous, and time and time again it is proven the hackers always win.

Only thing that could make this better is if they used Linux on the PS3's core chip to crack it.

Not true, who needs a settop blu-ray player when you can use powerdvd on your pc. If you're obtaining the disc images illegally anyway this cuts out the cost of the player AND the $20 blank blu-ray discs.

It'd be interesting to see if sony has even yet made back all the R&D money they laid out to develop these proprietary players/formats. i'm still pissed at them for killing the MiniDisc format in the states with all their proprietary software, audio formats and shit. I wanted Minidisc to catch on so bad when it first came out but after reading up on it even i wouldn't buy the player for all the hoops sony was making people jump through just to keep their creation uniquely theirs. Sure it's their every right, but sony is like 1 for 10 with this shit.

In the end i do hope blu-ray wins out, just for the larger storage capacity over HDDVD, but it's not in the consumer's best interest to have sony at the helm of it.

Anytime you make a statement how it's "unbreakable" security there will be thousands of people who live in their moms basement and shower once a week that will tackle the project and succeed. ESPECIALLY if an ass faced company like sony makes that statement.

:-p

Unless quantum cryptography comes to BlueRay/HD whatever anytime soon... I don't see an and to the cracking of all these new algorithms.

I used to hate Sony so much and I still think they ridiculous as a whole and I never bought a SONY product in my life till 2 months ago. I bought a PS3 and I also own an XBOX 360 Elite and a Wii all systems hooked up to a 52" HDTV.

I have to say that quality and functionality wise PS3 is truly good and Blue Ray playback as well as DVD upscaling (better than Nvidia and ATI) are marvelous quality wise. Also in the sound department PS3 wins hands down. Finally, price wise and compared to the XBOX Elite I really think that MS is the one having the bad deal. The PS3 bundle I bought had 2 SIXAXIS, 2 Games, Card Reader, 4 USB Ports, User Changeable HD, Rechargeable controllers and ofc WiFi. For god's sake Microsoft did not include anything on a 449 Euros deal (PS3 was 659 Euros) and you have to buy separately 2nd Controller, rechargeable battery packs and charger, NO WiFi or pay 79 Euros for it and not even a single game. If you add 2x59= 118 for the games, 79 for WiFi and 49 for the second controller then do the maths and see what is more expensive. Yet add 39 British pounds for Xbox LIVE gold I also paid.

Finally PS3 IS an excellent HD player while MS wants and extra 179 Euros for this ability.

So hardware wise PS3 is a Bargain compared to the Elite.

Finally on the Software front XBOX wins hands down right now but this is slightly changing.

All in all you have to give credit where credit is due and in this respect and PS3 wise SONY is NOT bad at all.

Didn't we see this a while back when really it was poor PC software giving those dedicated individuals access to keys stored in memory and not really cracking the encryption?

Ahh, this is about BD+ and not AACS.

Its funny how people hate a product simply because of the label or the company that makes it.

It take a long time and a lot of fucking over of your clients and the general population to get the reputation that Sony has rightfully earned.

So tell me, how did they "Fuck" you over?

Memory Stick->Memory Stick "Magic Gate"->Memory Stick Duo->Memory Stick Duo Pro (not sure about order, but you get the point)
Each one only somewhat backwards compatible

MiniDisc, now dead

UMD, struggling. Remember how many movies used to be launched for PSP alongside their DVD releases?

Remember SuperCD? 900MB that could only read in some SONY players and nothing else? Now even Sony drives can barely handle them...

Long story short, they keep pushing how their solution is superior, and yet they can't even stabilize their solutions long enough to permeate the market!

While I believe that Blue-Ray is technologically superior to HD, I am still reluctant to support them given Sony's track record. I have every confidence that if Sony wins the format wars, there will be a BR2 standard released shortly afterwards, which "first-version" BR players won't be able to read.

UMD was only intended as a video game format, i.e. cheaper to produce than Memory Disc and smaller. If it caught on as a portable media solution so much the better, but I don't believe Sony tried very hard at all to push it as such. They did not enter in to an alliance; they never supported UMDs in their other devices, i.e. only the PSP.

I really can't say much about the Memory Stick standards only that my brother owns a PSP and has no problems with them. Sony wasn't the only one create a hit or miss "SuperCD".

Sony innovates and many of their "innovations" have failed in the marketplace, but how/why does that affect you? You said; “they keep pushing how their solution is superior, and yet they can't even stabilize their solutions long enough to permeate the market!”, ok fair enough, but they aren’t forcing you to purchase or buy in to their solutions. Anyway, I’ve been happy with most of my Sony purchases. Of course I’m usually happy will all my purchases regardless of branding.

It makes consumers less willing to adopt their standards, because they don't know how long they'll be supported.
Imagine that you bought your nice, shiny new Sony camera when Memory Stick Duo first came out. Two years have gone by (for the sake of argument), and you've added a PSP to your collection. According to Sony's marketing, you can buy a 2GB Memory Stick and share it between all of your Sony electronics; makes it very easy to pack for a trip, no? But wait, the 2GB card that you bought is Duo Pro, and therefore unsupported by your camera. What's more, regular Duo cards are nowhere to be found, and they capped out at (let's say) 512MB!

slysoft just keeps on truckin' along nothing new to see here :p

So how well do their products work? before today I never heard of them.

LOL the picture of their CEO is priceless. He looks like European car salesman.

"Already"?? How can you say "already"?

How long has it been out? What's another security measure put in place on media that was unbroken for this long? I'm impressed, actually.

Well you know how it is here, they post all positive HD-DVD news, and only post spins on "bad" Blu-Ray news.

WRONG!!

They damn sure had mini disc for other devices. Such as a stand alone walkman type player. My brother had the misfortune of buying that POS too. Thing broke more than once and second time he just put it in mothballs.

oh please

I JUST had this conversation with someone else crying about unfair posts. We post good news ALL the time about Blu-ray or Sony...whenever they have it or whenever it is their week to be "#1 next gen HD format". I can't help it when the news is always bad / good.

The difference is...nobody EVER replies to those threads. Ever. (apparently not even you)

For the umpteenth time, we don't make the news, we post it.

Exactly. It's like some of the people in the video card forum who have RMA'd their 8800GTS half a dozen times and are in there screaming about how much NVIDIA sucks. At some point, you have to wonder if there's a pattern here. :p

IIRC, the BD+ stuff just started to get used. Check out Doom9.net for a better resource than my often-faulty memory.

Is it in the best interestes of the consumer to "fund" these format/standards wars? Ultimately, some/many folks are going to loose money/value in their purchases when one side wins out.

Sadly, I don't know a better way than innovation/capitalism to decide upon industry standards... just seems unfortunate as is.

If nothing else, cool technology comes along more slowly and at greater price (for much longer than need be), becuase sales are stifled by competing standards. It's a viscous cycle.

heh my Canon cameras use two different memory types as well; CF and SD, but I see what you are getting at.

"WRONG!!

That was mini disc and not UMD. I owned a Mini Disc player as well and yes Sony pushed that format pretty hard. Not a bad format either if I do say so, but it did have some issues too.

UMD is/was an evolution that's less expensive to produce and really only seen as a gaming storage format by Sony.

What is funny is that in many of the Sony threads I must come across like a complete Sony fanboy when in fact it couldn't be further from the truth. I've owned their portable media devices back in the cassette/CD/MD eras and consoles. No TVs, PCs, home audio or anything else for that matter. Heck, my only “current” Sony products are their consoles.
