So how do i block the net but still allow folding to connect to stanford?
i need to do this on win xp machines and possible win 2k3

no domains or anything like that just normal users... the users only have to have acces to on program

any advice?

Remove internet explorer. Or hide all the shortcuts to IE, windows explorer, My Computer, My Documents, the Run... option in the start menu, etc so they can't run it. Argh, too much work. Nevermind, just uninstall internet explorer. And set up F@H to NOT use IE settings.

If IE doesn't show up on the Add/Remove programs list, find sysoc.inf (or is it .ini? I forget) and remove the word 'hide' (in any form of capitalization) from the entire file. Save it, and you should be able to remove IE through the Add/Remove Programs dialog.

In XP, if you have SP2, you can probably config the firewall to block IE from accessing the web. That's probably the easiest, most straightforward solution. I can't tell you anything about 2003.

easier than that.

run polipo. don't tell users that it is there, and set that in the FAH config file. you can probably block access to all but certain sites (get the list of servers from stanford, put that in, plus the 2 assignment servers)

put that between the internet and all the machines and you're good to go.

Have everything go though a remote firewall or remote proxy.

FAH supports proxy (if I recall correctly) and setting up a proxy for F@H would be super easy. Could do this with a linux or windows machine.

More along those lines and doesn't involve a hack or much work. Set each PC up to use a proxy that doesn't exist. Then set F@H to not use IE settings. Everytime IE opens up it will try and contact the proxy and timeout essentially breaking all web traffic. Now its a pretty simple thing to simply uncheck the use proxy box, but few users will figure it out. If there are sites they still need you should be able to add them by adding an exception entry as well.

Polipo is a small proxy. The best way to do this (fairly complicated) would be to have polipo allowed to access only stanford, and have a firewall rule blocking access from the folding-only machines to the internet. Then just configure the FAH client on the fold-only machines to access through the polipo proxy machine, and you're all set.

If you need help getting all this going, PM or email me. hardfolding@users.sf.net
