I recently got a 4870 - decision between this and 260 was tough, but it came down to the fact I already have an MCW-60 which should fit these cards fine. Went to assemble my loop yesterday and the MCW-60 simply isn't going to work with the 4870. Oh the mounting holes are fine, but there is a good 0.5mm between the block and the core/shim on the 4870 - I could probably use a thermal pad to bridge this but they are bloody useless at transferring heat. Has me a bit perplexed as I'm seeing several people apparently running this combination :confused:
So what block should I replace it with (tbh I don't like the MCW-60 much anyway and the plastic barbs are nasty)? I'm currently thinking either a Fuzion or a Maze5 (loved my Maze4, unfortunately that doesn't fit the 4870 either). Although I've already sinked the memory/vrm's I would consider a full-coverage block as I'm tempted to voltmod the card and those vrm's are hard to keep cool when the card is overvolted according to the guys at XS.
Any ideas welcomed.

Edit: looks like the Maze5 is a no-go :(
 
The Koolance FC block is actually very decent this time around... It's cheaper and better looking than EK's blocks too IMO.

And it's single slot.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it - don't recall seeing it listed at any UK e-tailers so far. I just came across the EK block at SpecialTech for £60 - seems a good price since other places are charging nearly £80, but it's currently out-of-stock.
 
i am currently using two mcw60 to cool both my 4850's with out any issue as both core full load is 40c, 41c. I would assume that the mounting for both cards would be similar, have you tried reinstalling or remounting it again?

The hold-down plate has fixed stand-offs - without any washers it sits clear of the core/shim - if I hold it up to the light I can see the gap and it's quite big. But I've just found out that there is a HD2900 adapter plate which will make the MCW-60 compatible with my card (for £4) :eek: I presume this is included with newer MCW-60's?
However I'm wary of taking the block apart as it doesn't feature a rubber gasket (my first one leaked) so I'll probably just get a new block anyway - either option requires me to order something and wait until Tuesday at least, so if I cover both I should definitely have at least one leak-free block ;)

EDIT: From the pictures, the 2900 adapter looks identical to what mine came with :confused:
 
The D-Tek GFX2 block fits the HD4870 just fine:

Nice, ordered. Looks like I may be able to replace the two low-profile ramsinks under the barbs with full-height swifties too :)
Got some steel barbs to replace the cruddy plastic ones on my Apogee too.
 
Hey Mr. E, how are you cooling the vrms? got any pics of your card with everything on it?

but its not an elegant solution. Just received my EK 4800 series block earlier in the week. Planning on a tear down over the weekend to put the FC block into play.

Working out pretty well. Shots were taken as I was bleeding the air out of the system.

Well, guess that settles that.

After reading the extensive thread over on the XS forum about W'C'ing options for the 4870 (FC or non-FC) I'm ordering the EK FC block from Jab-tech. I was thinking about the XSPC Acetal topped version, but the EK seems to be working well for folks. Not sure about the XSPC's quality/track record anyways...
 
Gh()st, I too went with the Acetal topped version of the EK instead of the nickel plating that seems to be popular as of late. Personally the Acetal has served me well and seems to stand up well against long term wear.
