Connecticut lawmakers have recently unveiled legislation that would require age verification for social networking sites like MySpace. There are ten to twenty other states considering the same type of legislation. Could MySpace beat them to the punch and start their own age verification process? You never know.

Under the proposal, any networking site that fails to verify ages and obtain parental permission of users under 18 would face civil fines up to $5,000 per violation. Sites would have to check information about parents to make sure it is legitimate. Parents would be contacted directly when necessary.

So basically the usual political garbage "you must now do this or be fined" while leaving them to figure out just how exactly to comply, even though it's not really 100% feasable, other than to just ban anybody under 18 outright. And even then people under 18 still just find a way around it.

I love when lawmakers who clearly have no clue how the Internet works try to create and force new laws upon it.

What are they going to do? Ask for fingerprints? Credit cards? Sure, that's a good idea. Create a database of 100,000,000 credit cards. I'm sure THAT will work out nicely.

Face it. It's the Internet. Anyone with 10 minutes on their hands can get access to pretty much anything they can think of. This is nothing more then a politician's attempt to get some attention for themselves.

anything on the *.net that depicts age is a step in the right direction, now if we can only get it in games and forums =P ...tiny steps till the day all actions are held accountable via IP or etc. bane says it best!

would these forums be affected by this?

and yes....its all bullshit....just watched "Man of the Year" last night and this just follows right into what they are talking about

Idiots thinking up bills that don't do jack shit. Short of come knocking on your door how the fuck are you gonna do that?! And even then you can get any older friend to do it for you.

I'm more worried about what they are going to do to protect kids from congressmen, Mark Foley, Gerry Studds, Dan Crane, Mel Reynolds, etc.

"The technology is available. The solution is financially feasible, practically doable," he said. "If we can put a man on the moon, we can check ages of people on these Web sites."

Wow, obviously this guy doesn't know how long it took for nasa to put a man on the moon and how much money it costed nasa to put just one man on the moon.

How are pigs going to catch pervs if they can't pretend they're 12 yr old girls?

And that whole "moon" thing was fake.

This is just so dumb. Myspace is just a damn website that has over 100million+ accounts. It is just plain dumb to have an age verification. It is the stupid little kids that deserve all the blame - I've had enough of these bs lawsuits and these bs bills.

I figured out how they are going to do it, and I found it was pure genius. I mean why didn't we think of this before. Basically it goes like this:

You have myspace and the rest of the internet. All they need to do is put an age checking bouncer where the ends of each tube meet. Problem solved!

Seconded!!! And Let the bouncers wear gold like Mr.T!!!

I have to agree. Even if they were to ban everyone under 18 outright, the kids would just LIE about their ages and use Mommy or Daddy's credit card to prove they are 18.

It's about time to realize that the real danger is coming because we are SHIELDING children from the consequences of their decisions, and trying to keep sexual information and sexual freedom from them.
My parents NEVER tried to do that, I started having sex when I was 7 with older children and adults, and I was NEVER in danger. In fact, the one time someone tried to kidnap me when I was 9, MY PARENTS HAD INTRODUCED ME TO THE SUCKER!

None of this BS is going to protect children at all. What will protect children is for adults to FINALLY realize that children are going to be sexually active whether you want them to be or not, and that the best way to protect them is to be OPEN with them and allow them to tell you everything that is going on in their lives and not judge them based on your own personal sexual morality.

Can you come parent me... Please? I'll give you a motherfucking BOX of cookies... ;)

Seriously, outside of attempted kidnapping, (Promise I woulda whipped someones ASS if they tried to kidnap my kid) that is entirely how I plan to raise my kids. My parents tried to sheild me from so much. Tried. Failed. I'm their 'star' child btw :p

burn him at the steak!

seriously, i agree (holy crap dude 7?) plus parents expect schools to teach their kids everything... just pop out a kid, throw him/her/it in the school system for a good 15 years and out pops a perfect issue-less human?

please, spare me

I call shens. Sex at 7? Dude, I couldn't get a boner at that age... And even if you could, what are you going to do with a 7 year old weiner?

Sounds like an episode of Law & Order: SVU where these kids's mother formed a cult where it was OK to bork your children and have brothers and sisters bork each other.

It's very simple to verify an adult or not.

Ask them to spell ANY word correctly :)

I pity you. I started having erections at 5 years of age. Also, I, like christopher, had my first experience at the age of 7 (with a 13 year old girl)

Well, this is the first time in my life that I'm hearing of 5 and 7 year olds that can actually get wood, and I am by no means sheltered. My dad's a truck mechanic... Trust me... I had porn to choose from. LOL

Maybe I'm the weird one, here, but I'm worried about my 14 year old sister having sex because SHE is too young. A 7 year old boy should be rockin' the Matchbox cars and a 7 year old girl should be playing with Barbie.

Let's ask Steve. He's got a teenage daughter (that could probably outdrive the whole lot of us). What do you think, Steve?
