Hy guys.

I'll be building my new computer by tomorrw. It'll be the MSI Neo2 Plat, 3500+ and the BFG Geforce 6900GT.

Is there anything I should know before I start? Which drivers should I be using? Is there a certain BIOS I should flash to? I just want this new build to be as smooth as possible :)

Thanks guys.

Jnick

build the whole computer outside the case first to make sure everything works, once u find everything works and turns on then put it in the case on the mobo box or something like a towel, carefully. take ur time, no rush.

get the latest drivers and BIOSs on everything then if you find it doesnt work for u then experiment.

I just take my time and build it properly. Fallowing any wiring diagrams needed. Works everytime. I've never had to build a system outside the case.

I also wouldn't build anything on a towel.

yeah I have never built a PC outside first. I have built more than 100+ PC's over the years and have never done that. but anyway, I would just use the latest beta drivers from nzone. I use them on my 6800gt and they are fine. and if you plan to OC the card you can use coolbits and its in the driver panel itself. I use it and have mine running at 425/1100 and theres no problems at all with it. have fun on the build! its always fun building a new PC with good parts. and the 6800gt is a great choice for a vid card.

I'd say my "top three" would be:

(1) Adequate airflow
(2) Correct motherboard (AGP) drivers
(3) Latest Nvidia drivers

Those BFG cards get toasty if they don't get a good intake...

Install latest BIOS, latest chipset drivers, latest video card drivers. Don't fuck around with beta drivers or aftermarket drivers or any bullshit like that until you are up and running.

never wash your new video card in the washing machine. It will damage it.

Before doing any flashing, I recommend you try to overclock your card to its limits first using Coolbits or Rivatuner. If you can, try to get an aftermarket GPU cooler or a waterblock.

Once you've hit your OC ceiling, you can try to flash the card with an Ultra BIOS with relaxed timings. For more flexibility, you can use a BIOS that uses the 1.4 V for all modes of operation--2D, 2D/3D, 3D.

As for drivers, I recommend either the 67.03 Xtreme G drivers or the 67.66a Xtreme G drivers. I find these two are fast and have good IQ. As for other third-party drivers, they've either caused trouble for my system or have not improved much from nVIDIA's official drivers.

You can find the Xtreme G drivers from here:

Yes, definetely take it slowly or else you might do what I did and knock a couple of pieces off the card. Luckily a handy $15 solder rod helped alleviate the problem. But I was lucky and you may not be graced with the same.

Phew, just in time dude . . . I had the dishwasher OPEN . . . ;)

Optimummind - I heard the 7x betas were stable . .. are these Xtreme Gs better?

For now . . I'm going to take it easy with the OC . . only until I need it .

Thanks for the tips.

I agree with others here about not building a system outside the case on a towel. It's winter time, and there is a good chance of ESD (elctro static discharge).

Build it in the case so you can constantly ground yourself real fast to the case as you put parts in and out of the system (just touch any non painted surface in the case)

I do agree to take your time though. Read the MOBO Manual before even opening any equipment.

The 7x series supposedly offer better performance in HL2 and Doom 3 but they currently have one big flaw--the rendering of yellow water in HL2 when the waters should be clear.

According to one nVIDIA beta driver tester from nvnews, the 7x series will fix that bug in the 71.80 release.

Til then, I recommend either the 67.03 VXG or 67.66 VXG drivers. I used them extensively and so far, all is well.
