Just ordered a pair of these for $158 off eBay (after shipping). [80 ohm version of course]

Anyone have any experience with these cans for music (rock and metal mostly) and gaming? I'm wondering how these will sounds directly connected through my Audigy 2 ZS.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to change the gray pads to black ones?

The Audigy 2 should have enough to drive those. They are known for their bass. They are worth the money.

About the pads, there might be black ones out there. I know there is a gel pad that gives better sound isolation and bass

The different between the black and gray pads, is that the gray ones are made out of velour and the black ones are leather (either leatherette, which I wouldn't bother with, or genuine leather).

The difference between the two is that the genuine leather pads offer more isolation and increase bass performance. Since they increase isolation, closed headphones really benefit the most (DT770) while semi-open (DT880) and open (DT990) headphones receive an increase in bass, while suffering added reverberation which causes the sound to seem more distant from the listener and takes away from its dynamics.

I think I got my DT-770's from the same person. That's how much I paid from ebay.

And about the Rock and Metal, they don't sound very good for the first week, or until you break them in. I thought they sounded horrible for rock when I first got them, but after listening to them for a week, they got a whole lot better. And this is coming from a Soundblaster Live! 24 bit that is 5 years old.

Ever since I bought them, I haven't even turned on my Z-5500.

these are great for gaming- try the velour pads 1st- they are comfortable and these cans give tons of bass already!

I was using DT-880s with the 2ZS for a couple of years and didn't think there was a problem till I switched to an E-MU 1212m soundcard/Behringer MS40 monitor setup. The soundstage opened up considerably and with much more top and bottom end. Bit of a shock really all that extra detail coming through. Better soundcard apart I guess the 2ZS wasn't driving the cans hard enough resulting in weaker/thinner sound.

Beyerdynamic don't do anything other than the gray velour. That aside they are very comfortable and up for many hours of wear whether you game or just listen to music.

I have the DT770pros with an Audigy 2ZS. What I did to break them in was just play some heavy-ish rock on about medium volume overnight. After that, the sounded amazing.

I'm still amazed every time I put them on my head! btw, I also got mine off of eBay for $160 shipped.

Pretty decent 'cans for the money spent. I really recommend an amp as well. Even though yours are the 80 ohm varient, you will notice a night and day difference.

I would check out a gent by the name of "MisterX" here in these forums and see if he is still making amp's.

I dont think the audigy2 will be enough, I was using my audigy2 for temp til my prelude came. And they couldnt drive my ATH-AD700. You may have to get a card that will drive them. unless the audigy2 will, but they surey didnt do drive my headphones.

I've got these headphones and I absolutely love them. I've got them plugged into my X-Fi Extreme Music and amped with a PA2V2. The bass and isolation are incredible....though because of the fact that I can't hear a thing outside the headphones when I'm wearing them, I tend to piss off my room mate when he tries to get my attention. :-P

You're going to love those headphones!
