Better performing Home Server

Hi guys,

I currently run:

Intel Pentium E5200
2Gb DDR3 Corsair XMS Ram
6x 1TB Seagate/Samsung HDD's (7200rpm, some have bad sectors)

Looking to create a way to get much better throughput, atm I can transfer max 100MB/s but this slows as the server stays online longer.

My plan is to remove Windows Home Server, create a SAN using a spare intel 330d chip/2gb ddr2 and then put ESXi on the pentium and present this storage.

Am I miles off?
 
Just drive mirroring in WHS.

Not much critical data on there, more of a learning environment than mission critical.

I guess the first question is do you mean 100MB/s across the network? If you are running gigabit ethernet, that is towards the upper limit about what you should expect.

Well, I understand moving out from under windows home server as a way of improving your network throughput... if that is your goal then yes your transfer speeds should improve... depending on the OS you are moving to on that intel 330d motherboard, it should be a bit quicker. what OS are you using on the 330d to share the storage?

However no single disk except a SSD storage device or a high class hdd (think velociraptor) is going to be able to continue to saturate gigabit network at close to the theoretical limit (125MB/second) all the way across the entirety of the drive. Drives get slower the fuller they are and the more data they have to write nearer the center of the drive spindle.

You are going to need to go some sort of "RAID" or other solution if you want to saturate your gigabit network, unless you splurge on much quicker drives.

Also as far as ESXi, you'll probably need more memory than 2GB to run more than one windows server reliably.
