best way to remove ramsinks?

Ok, I need to remove the OCZ ramsinks I have fitted on my radeon 9800 pro...

Im very scared on the idea of just pulling them off, as it seems like I will get more than just the sink removed.

What is your best advice as to how to deal with the matter?

(sry, but search comes up empty when i tried)

 Sure you want to take that risk after going through the trouble of putting them one? Sorry to ask but did the card fuction well after this? Anyway you could try freezing the card for a about a hour and see if they pop off with a little force. :p

The sinks were great, i had managed to overclock my ram speeds from 340 mhz(or wvr the default speed is) to somewhere around 412 mhz

reason i ask, is that the card is dead(got fried by a power surge), and im going to see if i can sneak it thru a RMA

What did you use to attach them? Knowing that would help us help you.

Sucks about the power surge. :(

Power surge hu? I hope no one helps you and you break your card even more trying to remove the heatsinks. 'Sneaking' things thru RMA that you fuck up yourself is wrong and a small reason why top of the line cards cost $500.

just twist them off, should work fine if its just the thermal tape, i have the same sinks and they seem like they would easilt twist off.
hopefully they take it back.
make sure you clean off the chips real good so it dosnt look like you tampered with them.

and dont be so mean showmethemoney, i dont have a problem with rma'ing a card from a power surge or even if you dropped it or fried it overclocking, its a big huge company, its not like you are stealing from poor children or something.

I'm assuming you used some kind of thermal adhesive? The manufacturer should have something on recommendations to remove it.

Heat usually helps with adhesives...if it's hot where you live maybe try leaving it in a warm place for a while.

if its tape it shoud just twist off as mentioned.

if not then try one of two things:

1) the freezer n pop trick

2) try using the card for a while in ur PC, run something intensive so that it gets nice and hot...hopefully that will soften the adhesive and allow you to remove the sinks.

alright thanks for the advice, I'll try some of these later today

(it is using the thermal tape junk that came already on the ram sinks)

and about the power surge, Mr. $$$$, go read my thread in general hardware instead of assuming otherwise

wont freezer stuff build up on your card if you leave it in there, and ruin your card?

ya gots to put it in a ziplock/sealable bag first...

and even then only leave it in there for like 2hours..maybe a little more...

i wouldnt be too scared of condensation on the card for 2 reasons

#1, it's not being totally soaked in water than frozen into one big icecube(as long as there is no water present when power goes to the card, then there will be no death)

and #2 its already dead

mmm frozen radeon....

sounds like a good dessert, no?

and $$$ why would you assume he did it himself? I read power surge and thought "damn that must suck. I blew out some speakers the same way." It's not like he tried a volt mod and fried it and tried to RMA it.

i hope no one ever helps your ass when your in need of some help...and really who gives a fuck if this guy wants to get his card RMA'd. I think you need a glass of STFU...

i agree you really need to take a fuckin chill pill.....maybe with some arsonic in the mix to calm u down...if a power surge kills his card AND IT IS TSTILL UNDER THE 1-3 YEAR WARRANTY..he has every right to RMA it.

just kidding about the arsonic by the way.
:p

ok so frozen radeon and now a glass of stfu? is anyone else getting hungry?

good luck with the RMA :)

Personally, I would feel safer running it hot and then using a razor blade (or a piece of floss/string) to get the sinks off rather than freezing. I've heard about the BGA chips coming off with the sinks when frozen, though that was using glue. Good luck!

what i did to get my friends ramsinks off was the freezer trick...JUST be careful doing it..and don't worry about giving it a little bit of force..also pry the sinks off on all 4 sides..i found that doing all 4 sides gets it off better. BUT!..it takes 10-20 min longer
but it's worth it

I did the freezer thing before in the past and it seemed to help. Of course mine wasn't a gfx card it was a motherboard. Stupid fan died on my chip cooler I had added and I decided to rip it off and just throw on the largest heatsink I could find.

Mine wasn't dead going in the freezer, it was just unstable, and it wasn't dead coming out of the freezer either. Whocares about condensation, unless you plan on plugging the thing back in right away. I got the burnt out fan/hs off with a putty knife and some elbow grease. Then I let the board sit for a day and then put on the new h/s and reinstalled it in my machine and it worked like a charm. You don't have to worry about waiting since your not putting it back in your system, but even just a few hours would probably be fine if you were plugging it back in. I waited a day since I left my board in the freezer overnight. I wanted to make sure it was good and cold :D.

Now you might have a little more trouble than I did since a northbridge is a lot bigger than a memory chip, but who knows. Just be careful and take your time.

ok well i just left my card to chill for 4 hours, and the sinks popped right off when i pried on them with a screwdriver :)

thx 2 all

play nice ;)

there is a severe flaming crackdown goin on in here right now

just a friendly word of advise
use a little more creativity, stfu is cutting it
and would likely draw more powerful attention ;)

hmm... i have to remove the same ramsinks if i get one of those new vga silencers, since they also cool the ram.
first ill try playing a bunch of games and running HDR and then taking them off, if not, i suppose il try the freezer trick.
i did try the freezer trick for my old gf4mx-420 which had an epoxied on sink.
i just left it in the freezer overnight in a static bag, and then tried to get it off with fishing wire.
that didnt work so i tried using nail polish remover and twisting it off, that failed as well.
then i took a credit card, wedged it under the sink, and then pryed it right off with a butter knife. i acctually scraped the card a bit, but amazingly it still worked perfectly
im sure the sinks will be much easier to take off of my 9800pro, since they are only on with some thermal tape.
