Best SSD Available

You can see the FW with a variety of utilites, like CrystalDiskInfo. Samsung's Magician is fine though. I would suspect the next FW to be available within the next month or so, but I wouldn't upgrade unless you were suffing from an issue.

There was a problem with the 01 FW where one of the Smart attributes wouldn't update properly on some 830s. But -- that's not really a big deal. My 830 had that problem, but it didn't "affect" anything. It just wouldn't update the 177 Wear Leveling Count correctly. Not a big deal, and since fixed.
 
Alright everyone, I got my SSD and it is blazing fast so far. The firmware that came loaded on it is CXM03B1Q, which I think is the latest version. So far no problems. I will post some speed results at some point when I get done setting up my system and have some free time. Thanks again for all the help.

System is now stable with a core i7 920 overclocked to 4GHz, 24GB of DDR3 1600 ram and my new SSD :)
 
Nice. I have some more drives on the way, and I was hoping they'd be here today. I'd like to see how the 512 830 gets along in your system.

Alright well I ran my first benchmark and while I have been pleased with performance compared to my old hard drives I am a bit disappointed in the results. Numbers from what I have seen in other benchmarks show it getting around 500 seq. read and 400 seq. write but my numbers fall far below that and I am not sure why. It is on a 6GBPS connection but its slow. Only thing I can think of is maybe the performance has degraded from all the writes of installing windows and my programs back on so perhaps if I let it trim up over night it will be back up to par. Anyone have any thoughs?

I'd try disabling Intel speedstep and C states in the bios/Uefi. Also, does AS SSD show your SSD as aligned?
 
Here are my results for AS SSD, alignment looks ok but still not up to speed. I know I already have speedstep disabled and I think I have C states disabled too but I will check real quick to be sure.

You said it's plugged into a 6Gbps SATA port but what controller is associated with the port?
 
No I have done nothing special at all to my drive other run the Samsung Magician.

Well it is kinda strange because if I go into my bios AHCI configuration my 750 gig 7200rpm drive and my DVD rom drive are both listed but all others say empty as if my SSD isn't plugged in. However if I go to hard drive boot order the SSD is listed and I have it at the first position. Also as my computer boots up I believe a Marvell screen comes up listing my SSD as 6gpbs. The screen flashed by pretty quick though so it is hard to see the details.

EDIT: I have the marvell controller and the intel controller both in AHCI mode. The intel controller has my 750 gig hard drive and my DVD rom, while the Marvell controller has my SSD. Is this ok or should I set the Intel controller back to IDE? Can't find any reason the hard drive should only be running at 2/3 speed.

Marvell SATA 6GB is SLOW - you need intel's 6G controllers to see anywhere near 500 reads. This is a year old well-known fact. Stay away from Marvell. That's why a lot of folks jumped to the P67's - for the intel 6G controllers.

edit: oops, I see the Intel ports are only 3 Gbps? Just leave the SSD on the Marvell controller then. It's fast enough. :)

So if I were to fix this, what would be the easiest fix? Replacing the mobo? Or is there a PCI-E controller I can get or what? Could you maybe link some parts for me?

I would (did, actually 4) buy the new motherboard, with intel's 6G PCH controller on it. The board you have has the old intel 3G ICH ctrlr.
Z67, P67, x79 etc. all have the new controller.
Of course, you'll need a new CPU and potentially memory to go along with it.

The drive performs fast for your needs, right? I think the difference in benchmarks isn't worth losing a wink of sleep over, now that you know what the cause is.

Heck, I'm throttled on SATA II myself and I've never found a cause to complain about my SSD speed. It's more than fast enough. :cool:

Yes it is fast, however it kinda bothers me that I paid a premium for the faster drive but now I can't use it to it's full potential so it seems kind of a waste of money :/

I see what you mean, but your 4K speeds -- which are most important -- are better than the other benchmark posted. Your access times are downright ridiculous. Your sequential reads are well into SATA III territory and your sequential writes are down a little from AQ_OC's benchmark... but how often do you do sequential writes where 200+ MB/s isn't considered ridiculous fast?

I don't know that it's worth getting a new mobo / processor just to squeeze out the final 1% noticeable difference, but that is JMO.

How long does it take to do a restart from the Win7 desktop to the Win7 desktop? How long does it take apps to start up the first time? Using artificial benchmarks to make yourself feel good about your purchases is the wrong way to approach this. Place a higher importance on whether the drive is making your computer feel speedy or not. Compare it to a similar computer that works from a hard drive. Don't let mere numbers get you into a mode of spending more money. Your scores are still way higher than the first SSD I bought (a 160GB intel x25) which is the boot drive on my desktop PC.

You've got all the important performance now. It would be faster on Intel's Z68/P67/H67 motherboards, but mostly sequentially. That sequential performance in not worth upgrading for alone, but I will say I'm most pleased with my 1155 motherboards and processors. The platform is pretty excellent.

So my advice: use it and be happy with it now. Later, upgrade to Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge. It's that simple.
 
And your access times are stupid low. It's actually incredible how awesome your access times are with the AS-SSD results. So in real terms, your drive is still incredibly fast.

I think the 64gig version takes a bit of a performance dive so I wouldn't get that personally but the 128 should be pretty good, or 256 even better if you can muster it.

Actually, the 830 is one of the best 64GB drives around. Because it uses 32gbit devices, 27nm Toggle NAND, performance is much better than other 64GB. That said, the 128GB is just awesome. There are not many drives which can compete with the 128GB version of the 830 (like the 120/128GB SF drives and M4, Plextor M3, OCZ Octane, etc.).

The 128 is highly recommended by me, but the 64GB version won't disappoint either.

Actually yes I should clarify my earlier post. The 64GB version of the 830 is a fantastic drive when compared with other 64GB drives however you can get a significant performance boost by jumping up to the 128GB version. So my recommendation is also to get the 128GB drive if you can manage it.
 
I should probably mention that I like all of the Toggle NAND equipped drives at the moment, I just have more hands on time with SF2281/toggle NAND drives and the Samsung 830s than other SSDs you'd be considering.

But really, most drives are pretty good now. Some drives are disadvantaged in smaller capacities because they possess fewer devices to work with, but almost every Sata III drive on the market is more than adequate. Price is another matter though.
