I am building a home file server / NAS server and am just looking for a very extreme low power consuming CPU. Either AMD or Intel is fine as long as it's got a little bit of muscle and extremely energy efficient. I do need the CPU to be mult-core and 64 bit compatible.

Let me know what you guys think is the best CPU.

Thanks all!

1. Buy a router with a USB plug for external storage.
2. Hook up drive with external USB enclosure
3. ?????
4. Profit?

What exactly will you be doing with it? a single core athlon or celeron can handle most/all nas chores.

I thought about that myself once whats with the nas thingy... never looked into it although i think your idea is great. I'm guessing there has to be something more to the nas thing in order for someone to pursue it over the more simple thing. But i agree 100 percent with you and if i need networked storage i would do what you said above. With that said i'm sure he's done his research into what he wants whatever it is so unsure myself as i don't know exactly what he is doing.

I would get the Intel cpu of 35 watts celeron 430.

Now if I wanted network storage I would get this for 99 dollars instead.

Why don't you just go live in the woods and use pigeons to do your file transfers. You're still wasting more energy than most people by leaving it on all the time. But in reality the mutli-millionaires who started this bullshit trend of go green shit waste 10x more than you.
