When I turn off Overdrive my fan drops back to auto and I reach temps of 70c. The only reason I trn it off is this the only way I can gt Crysis and Dirt2 to play without liottle spots appearing after a few minutes.

Little spots are called rendering artefacts, this particular kind of artefact is caused by memory overheating, usualy due to lack of sufficient cooling.

Automatic fan control dynamically changes the fanspeed to provide enough cooling to always keep the card cool, if you set a manual speed for the fan then you need to make sure it's high enough to cool the card under all conditions.

Most of the time automatic fanspeed is the best, if you control it manually you'll end up having to hear a loud fan when not running games when it could be much quieter since the card requires much less cooling when idle (2d mode)

but should a person decide to go manual fan control, what's the easiest / light weight app to use? can you do it through CCC or do you need to use Afterburner or something? (lol, feels funny to be a n00b at something here hehe)

You can do it under ATI Overdrive in the CCC, just tick the option to enable it.

Though Afterburner has an option to scale how the fan works were the CCC does not. In CCC you set it to X%, Afterburner can increase it depending just how hot it is. (Read: More control.)

Thanks for the input folks. PrincessFrosty; You mean system memory or card. I have had strange video problems from system memory buteven with my Corsair 1866 in BIOS default of 1333 I still get this. I have tried everything and turning of Overdrive works. It's turned on by default??? My card reaches 70c on auto and I can keep it around 43-48c with my fan on 75%. With the fn on auto my whole system runs 5c + hotter. I don't mind the noise. I have an OakExpress rolltop desk from '97, long before hot sstems. I have a window dual fan sucking in the leg well and a smaller personal fan pushing.
