best EXTERNAL hd?

hey im looking to buy a external hd since i had to reformatt and lose everything. tried but couldnt boot into windows any way. so i wanna back up what files i will be able to find from disks and such. any recomendations? i wanna spend under $200 and i would like the size to be 250gig+. thanks
 
Buying an internal disk of your choice and a good enclosure is probably a good bet. Seagate drives make good backup disks - good STR, not particularly susceptible to vibration, high capacities available. I have no recommendations for external enclosures, maybe someone can chip in here.

 
if you end up going that route, you need to make sure that you get a good chipset. For FW the Oxford 911 (or follow up) is recommended and for USB2.0 I'd say go with Cypress.

It may be hard to find out which chip your future enclosure is going to use, but It's a pretty safe bet that if you find the CHEAPEST one, it will not use either of these :)

QFT because it'll come out A LOT cheaper than just buying an external. My HDD and enclosure came 2 days ago and I assembled it yesterday (and partitioned and formatted the drive) and everything's working fine!

This is the enclosure I got from Newegg. It works fine. It doesn't come with a firewire port, but the other ones that did have it were either more than I was willing to pay for, or didn't have all that great reviews. It does however have USB 2.0.
 
mind letting us know what chipset it has? I mean, if you have a minute or two :)
 
yea would it just be better to buy an internal cheap RELIABLE one. like i dont need 16mb cache and 10,000 rpm when im gonna backup my data on it. i have my dimaondmax now but if it failed or i cant acess it i would like to have a backup either way. ALSO would another hd fit in my shuttle (SN25P)? i have one hd and a dvd drive
