hey, recently my old digital camera died on me and it was past the warranty. I had a Nikon Coolpix 3200, it was a nice little camera, but the only thing lacking was the zoom.

So now I'm in the market for a new digital camera, and the budget is $300. I'm hoping to get a nice camera, with decent features and a good zoom. I'm actually thinking about a Canon S2 IS, since I heard about it here, read multiple reviews and found a place on Amazon that sells it for $319, but I'm not sure if I want a camera that big. I've held it in Best Buy, good fit in the hands but its still kind of bulky to be carrying around to parties and stuff just in my pockets.

I'm open to any and all suggestions
Thanks

Well big zoom usually = big size. I have a DSC-V3 as my "carry around" camera. Sure its a bit big but considering the features such as night vision, laser focus, etc. I'm sacrificing SOME portability for the features that it has. In your case the S2 has ALOT more zoom then mine and obviously its a bigger camera. You just have to decide whats more important to you and go with that! :)

Looked at any of the Canon A series? I'm thinking about an A620 myself. The A 700 gives you 6x optical but no IS. It's 6mp where the 620 is 7mp with 4x. I'm probably gonna get a 620. Newegg has it for 299 with a 512sd card combo.
Heres a review.

The tough part is making the final choice. The more you read and learn the harder it is to choose. This should fit your budget though and I am partial to Canons.

I personally was going to jump on the a610 as do you really need the extra 2 megapixels of the a620? plus it can be had for around 200 bucks (costco has it for 214, a few extra bucks for the best return policy ever, if naything goes wrong). The a610 (5mp) has all the same features minus the a620 7mp and internet video camera capabilty. I read that 5 mp will print a perfect 8x10 and most people do not print bigger than that. Just my two cents... Plus that extra money can be spent on flash memory etc.

Long Detailed review of the A610 (if don't like reading atleast skip to the conclusion and read it)

One thing to note about both the a610 and a620 is exceptional battery life 350+ pictures before replacing batteries.

Plus read all the comments at dpreview (link posted on previous post) about the a610, a lot of poeple really like the a610 (no full review as it is just a lesser mp version of the a620)

I have been doing a lot of research as I have been looking to purchase a new camera for my trip to central america this summer

I say get the S2. IS rules, I would look in getting a P&S with some form of IS...

I got the canon 450SD.. I love it.. It's fairly small, it's got a sexy big LCD, the battery life is good, and it takes great pictures.. its my carry around camera, I basically carry it every where.
