I have the system in my sig. I need to OC more, but with the stock cooler load temps are hitting 53-54C. What would you recommend? I have heard good things about Zalman's 9500LED and the Scythe Ninja. My computer so damn loud that noise is not a factor.

I have the AC Freezer Pro 64 and it's pretty good for the money. I'd say the Ninja though if you want the best.

Scythe Ninja is fantastic - either completely silent with no fan or almost silent with the right 120 mm fan.

I also like all of the Thermalright heatsinks. I had an XP-90 before the Ninja and it was also very nice.

tuniq tower is the best IMO. I love my 9500 though i wouldnt trade anything for it (except water :))

I'll throw in another vote for the ninja. Good performance, quiet, and very light for it's class.

Most definetly the Ninja, especially if you're only running the stock cooler now. It'll bring those temps down drastically and also keep the noise level down.

I just bought a Thermaltake VENUS 12, and it comes with two types of variable speed controllers ,either in the case slot (back of PC) or in the 3.5 inch floppy slot

works great

I've always liked Thermalright myself and the XP-90 and XP120 are pretty highly rated

Except that the stock dual core opteron (and x2 4200 and up) coolers are equivalent to the XP-90. If you need that level of cooling, ebay them for about $15 shipped.

The XP120 is a good choice, but the Ninja is $10 cheaper as listed on Newegg and will perform better.

Another vote for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro....imo the best blend of price, performance, quality and silence you can find. You can find coolers that perform a little better but they'll likely cost twice as much and possibly have mounting issues and higher noise. You can find lower priced sinks but those won't be much better than the stock cooler.

I live near MWave and might pick up my new rig at will call today. I may order the Arctic Cooler 64 or Ninja from NewEgg (didn't see at MWave), but would have to wait for shipping. If I install the stock HS from a AM2 X2 4600, how difficult is it to completely remove the thermal pad remnants from the chip if or when it becomes nec to switch over to the AC64 or Ninja.

Its easy. The stock pads really dont leave much residue behind.

Well, its all about how much you want to spend...Freezer is great for the money. For alittle more you can get something better.

If you have money to burn, then a TT Big Typhoon is a good choice, XP120 is nice also. Ive heard that the Asus Starice is a pretty good cooler, however its VERY VERY loud.

If you have more then that, try water cooling...if you have even more then that, try Phase like a Vaporchill.

If you going to stick with air, i belive the Zalman 9500, TT Big Typhoon XP120 are your best choices on the market. I have seen some really insane coolers to like the Asus Starice and the Coolermaster Hyper6 or something. These are like little screaming jet engines. =) So its up to you and how much noise you can handle. =). Normally, more noise = more RPM = more CFM= better cooling.

No matter what you pick, use good thermal paste....AS5 or better if its a option for you. ANYTHING is better then the stock thermal pad =)

I was running a 3500+ with the stock heatsink and fan and I was getting 60C+ with a load. Went out and got a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro and it dropped to 45C max with a load. Never saw it go over 45C until the summer heat came in. I don't have AC in my house and it has been about 35C outside and probably 40C+ in my room, so when that happens and you try to play a game the temps creep up there. But if you live in a nice 21C environment (72F) in my experience, you should see some pretty good temps.

Thanks, I think it's down to the Zalman or the Ninja. Which is quieter? My parents have banned me from buying more PC crap BUT since the PC is in the room where the TV, mom's PC and dad's laptop is if the addition reduces the noise this PC makes, I think they'll go for it. Is the stock fan any good?

I believe the stock fan on the Ninja Plus is quiet, but since you can add any fan at all (or even run it passively) it's the quietest.

Is this fan: 9. Scythe SFF21F - (28dba/64cfm) the one that comes stock with the Ninja? I don't want to buy a second copy of the same thing....

Doesn't look like it considering on Newegg the Ninja plus's fan is listed with these specs:
Air Flow 46.5CFM
Noise Level 23.5dBA

Would it be worth it to buy the new fan then? And can I get the Ninja cheaper somewhere sans fan?

I don't think they sell it that way anymore. You might be able to find it....

As for a different fan, you could always buy a new one depending on your tolerance for noise. In my P180 that 75003 is more than quiet enough for me, but i'm not a noise nazi.
