I'm not sure what consitutes a "beginning modelling program", but you can give Blender a shot. As free and Open-Source software, it's hard to beat the price.

I use Blender as well. I wouldn't say it's a good beginner program, as It's more compex then simple 3D modeling programs, but it's free and very powerful. There's plenty of tutorials (both text based, and video) online, to get you going though.
