Bargain Build - BigAdv

My biggest hope is that the new SMP client can run the -bigadv WU in a windows based platform.

That will get rid of the VM overhead and make things much easier.
SMP2 will use a completely new core, so that isn't going to happen. However, we might see a new type of big workunit specifically designed for the SMP2 client.

If they are spending all this time optimizing a new core, I would be shocked that they would not repackage -bigadv for it.
 
SMP2 is going to be thread based so that would make something like bigadv for Windows more possible.

I'm sure they'll have some equivalent, but it won't be the same units we have now.

Man I hope so, the SMP MPICH client is long in the tooth. It works, but it is definitely long in the tooth. :)

Thanks for the followup info on the GPU cut, I won't worry about it then. Rather run with both 260s in this one anyway even if I lose a minor bit of cpu cycle time. ;)
 
Sub'd. I am contemplating a 2P rig for work and also to add to my PpD to stave off 3 folks on my threat list. I've already been mowed by Ax and don't want to slip further :(

 
I think I've found the max stable overclock of my 920's.
21 multi, 185 bclk = 3.9 Ghz. Memory at 1480 Mhz.

At 3.9 Ghz they have around the same frame time as my E5355 Xeons @ 3.4 Ghz.
Frame times of between 32:15-34:00.
The first few frame from a restart are always slightly slower.
Memory wise they have around 7Gb free from 12Gb.
So a pure folder with only 6Gb is very possible.

I'm running all my bigadv boxen with a couple of Nvidia GPU clients.
These only take up ~1% if that of the CPU cycles and slow the client down by ~30-45 sec per frame.
I use WinAFC to set the gpu fahcores to normal and lock then to the last cpu core.
Even without the vm set to low they run at full speed, but I still set the vm to low just in case.
The ~1k PpD lost from the bigadv client is more than made up by the 10-13k PpD from the GPU clients.

I've not played around anymore with memory speeds but will later when I get a box that has just sent work in.
I don't like resetting a work-unit thats more than a few frames in, as the risk of loosing work is always there.

I see no reason to run -smp 7 unless your trying to fold on ATI card.
By raising the fahcore to normal the nvidia client grabs enough spare cycles to fold at almost full speed even if the vm is not dropped to low.

Saying that going from 8 physical cores down to 7 pyysial cores will slow you down by 7/8 or 12.5%.
As FaH doesn't normally run at 100% full load, its more like 99.5%, call it a 12% slow down.
I've read that hyper threading on an i7 gives around a 60% increase in work done, but I could be wrong.
If thats the case then 12.5%. x 0.6 = 7.5%.
Again I would call it a 7% slowdown.

So I would expect around a 7% slowdown, +/- a percent or two, slow down by limiting FaH to only 7 cores on an i7, but these are only guessermate figures.

I think smp -7 is of most benefit to those running on native installs of Linux and folding with GPUs under WINE. However, I haven't tested this myself yet. I will hopefully be ordering some i7 gear on Thursday.
 
BUMP!!

OK, so I sold my 3 way folder and have picked up a i7 that hit 4.2 on air, question is now what board and RAM should I get? Cheap is good!!

Hell, I'll even go used if it comes up. I'm not planning on running GPUs but maybe 1 or 2, so I dont need a 4 slotter

CHEAP is the goal, if its low enough I may get 2 if I sell my 8 way folder
 
Ram speed makes a big difference to bigadv speed.
So 6Gb of DDR3-1600 would be the minimum spec I'd aim for.

I dont think theres a lot of difference between low-ish end x58 MoBo's so pick one your happy with.
I ended up with the Asus P6T SE but others will work just as well.

If your running on air at above 4 Ghz then a TRUE or similar type of heatsink is almost a must.
I'm cooling my i7's with Ultra 90 but I've 2x high cfm fans in a push-pull setup.

Id get this board and this Ram.

That board is just dirt cheap.
And I like that ram because it has a lower voltage which will be better for OC.

Cant wait to fire this beast up, I loved when I was over 50k PPD, can't wait to get back there!!

8GB is now the minimum requirement for ram in my book! :) 12GB is great! :)
