What do you guys suppose is the bare minimum vid card I could get by with to play Far Cry comfortably? It is going to be in a rig with a 1.6 CPU with 256 mb ram

9800 pro, or similar upcoming 8 pipe solutions. If you don't mind turning things down or running at low resolutions a 4 pipe 9600 pro would do.

I am looking for the 'bare minimum' card I can use:) I was thinking 5600/9600 ish?

You're not going to believe this but I'll say it anyway. I play FC at work on a P4C 2.6 and a 9600NP 128bit OCed 450/500 @12x10 medium. NO AA NO AF and get above 30fps usually. That's a $65 card right now.

At home a GT 448/1200 and it's a lot better:)

Geez I did'nt even see 1.6 and 256mb....:Q:(

What are your full system specs? You relise no way 256MB ram is going to cut it?

A A64 @1.6 could handle the game but not much else... May have to seriously think about dropping $300 for a new setup. Ram is of course the killer..since you need 512MB min... what ram you got? Maybe you can add just 256MB to it and meet minimum guidlines.

You could build a very good setup out of an Athlon XP mobile $77 and a shuttle AN35N for $55 if your willing to overclcok to say 2.3Ghz...

But frankly, even if you had a x800xt inside your current system, it would be a dog in farcry.

Abit NF7
BFGTech GF4 Ti4200 128MB 8x DDR
20gb hd
Athlon XP 2000+
512 DDR
48X cdrw
300w psu
Case

How would that do on Doom3 apossed to Farcry?

Better since it's an OpenGL game and Nvidia pwnz those. My guess is 10x7, med to high, no AA or AF.

You can overclcok those Ti's to FX 5700U type levels and your processor too with that most excellent mobo...You're all good.

i'd get a 9600 instead of a ti4200.......they'll outpreform the ti4200 in almost everything, and DooM and Farcry for certain.

The system above is one i maybe trading my laptop for so pulling the the card and upgrading isnt to big of a deal

With a ti4200 you'll be looking at 800x600@medium quality for doom3. Friend of mine had an 1800+, 512 ram, and a ti4400 and he couldn't run it any higher than that.

It did however look surprisingly good at those settings :)

*scoff* I wish, I own a ti4200 and with a p4 2.6 and a gig'o corsair 2-2-2-5 pro and I can't run over 640/480 med quality or it's crap. And forget Farcry's less scalable game. I run it barley playable at lowest everything till I build my x800XT FX-55 system it'll have to do
Bare Min... what's your price range... for the $130 range an 5700U should serve quite nicley but a 9800 pro would be a wiser investment. Though neither would be particularly wise becuase it's such a critical time to buy top of the line or close or get left in the dust. I wouldn't recomend andthing less than a 6800nu. It's just bad timing to buy a low budget card right now
