Bad sectors- saving data? help...

I was going to do some regular maintenance on my mom's computer the other night... Everyone once in a while I do scandisk, update antivirus/anti-spyware, defrag etc...

old comp specs
3.2GB "TriGem" HD (now in my comp)
emachine/celeron 366
windows 98

As I was booting it up, a message came up about running scandisk for bad sectors. So I just shut it off there, and brought it home. I have it hooked into my machine and tried to make a norton ghost image but it came up with errors about bad sectors and it stopped. I set it to ignore bad sectors and made an image... Made an image with r-studio and it gave me errors about bad sectors in 2 different areas on the drive. It will not let me straight up copy the files from the drive to mine, it locks up my system after a short while.

Is it possible to salvage the data that's in the bad sectors? I think that if I just run scandisk or chkdsk that I will lose whatever is in those sectors for sure. There are quite a lot of digital camera photos on here so I would like to get everything off without losing anything before the damn drive goes bad completely.
 
any ideas? I have decided not to mess with it until I come up with a plan. It could develop more problems every time I read it =/ I think I will get a new HD since this one is likely dieing anyways and attempt to clone to a new HD.
 
Bump... Ideas anyone? I'm trying to find a new drive for this system that it will accept(so it needs to be smaller) and to then clone it to that drive.
 
Even if you do that, chances are that you won't be able to copy the data from the bad sectors.. all you'll be able to know is to see if your crucial files survived. It's almost impossible

So if you do try to clone it, you'll need a software that can deal with read errors and still keep the sections of the file that it's able to read - maybe try DiskPatch from downloads.com?

You should be able to get at least something off of the drive if there isn't surface damage to it.
 
if u clone /copy , u r only copyin over the vbad data neway

theway i did mine , was i plug it in as a 2nd hdd, boot to xp in my 1st hdd , let it do a scasn dsisk wen its re bootuing,. it will fix and del mny cross linkd files , thenu can at least start pullin data off ur 2nd dd
