Bad Pump / Bad User? D5 problem

Alright so I finally get all the parts to water cool, which are:
Danger Den D5
MCW 6002
Maze 4
big heatercore
fillport
ok so I fill the system (outside the case) with water with food coloring in it. I then fire up the pump (on the highest speed setting). Everything works fine. Couple hours later I come in and its spring a leak (I have been checking on it every 30 minutes or so) from the maze 4 connect. I hadn't tightened the clamps very tight because I figured everything seemed tight, and I was going to be taking it apart agian to put it in my case anyway. So anyway I unplug the pump and refil the system with water. There is alot of air in the system, which seems normal since it the leak had let air in. After topping off the fillport I start the pump. At this point, I touch the pump and realize that the thing that you rotate to open the pump is slightly loose so I tighen it good. The pump, after less than a minute starts rattling, ALOT. I think well, its getting the air out, I hadn't had nearly this much air earlier thats why it didn't make the noise. Water is still moving around the loop and everything - and the fillport is right before the pump so the pump is getting enough water. I then stop the pump when it stays loud, thinking maybe there is air in the pump...tbc
 
There is air in the pump so I move the system around so the air comes out and then I plug the pump back in and nada. It doesnt do anything. Water is still being applied and everything, but the pump just doesnt start. So what do you guys think the problem is. I will try it agian later without any of the circuit, just the pump tomorrow - I am getting tired at this point, and I am running low on patience. I would really appreciate some help - maybe somone saying "hey just flip a switch" or something, but I am not sure that will happen.
 
You should always read the instructions on your stuff, the pump is shipped with that ring loose. You could have burnt the pump up which is what it sounds like. Pull it apart and see if the impeller is turning freely if it is then reassemble it carefully and fill the loop fully then fire it off, see what happens from there. If it still won't start I'd suggest saving up because you'll need to buy a new pump.
 
try wiggling the rheostat. or check on the seals in the pump to see if water is getting in the motor, this would probably happen on a apogee system from the shavings but my maze 4 chipset had chrome chips in it so maybe the same problem happened with your cpu block
 
silly question: how do you know that the pump does start? does it just not make any noise? do you have a flow meter that shows zero flow?

the D5 shouldn't be all that loud. if you put a few drops of colour into the T-line that you say is right before your pump via a T-line, and they get drawn immediately into the pump abd through the loop, then the pumps is working; it's just quiet. if the dye doesn't get drawn through the pump, you may have a problem.

shavings from an apogee block are more likely to cause premature failure rather than an immediate death.

i don't like the apogee at all, however he has said that he is using a MCW6002 block, which has been a very good block in terms of overall QC and lack of shavings. it's been abandoned due to cost of manufacture, as opposed to anything else.

meh, the pump should be able to tollerate air in the mix just fine. it's not like he dry-fired the thing. pumps aren't delicate flowers. so long as it is moving mostly coolant it's not going to break in the short term.

If the ring is loose enough to allow enough air in to cause the pump to cavitate then it very well could burn up. Plus he tightened the ring down with the pump running causing it to start raising a ruckus, that could be the housing misaligned and pushing on the impeller, again possibly burning up the bearing.

The long and short of it is after disassembling it to make certain the impeller is in fact intact and reassembling it with great care, if it won't fire up it means he's burnt it up in some way or another. Before wandering away from the PC it was working properly, it was after the leak and the tightening of the ring that it freaked out then stopped working. That kinda defeats any argument of it being faulty workmanship.
 
impeller is not turning freely, it rubs in one spot as it turns. There is also a chunk of paint missing on one of the fins (not really a fin, but the thing that moves the water. Finally When I look down the middle there is a piece that looks off center, so that the impeller doesn't properly rotate around the center. Am I hosed?

i was never arguing for faulty workmanship per-se, however having a stream of air in a primed pump moving a stream of mostly water falls within the realms of normal opperation. no matter what you cooing loop is like, having some air in the loop while filling and bleeding is a given, and the pump should be able to take it.

if you did not dry-fire the pump, then no you are not hosed. having some air in the loop is within the realm of normal opperation.

if you did not dry-fire the pump or did not do anything else bad that you have thus far omitted mentioning, it's totally valid as a warrenty claim.

i don't believe in defrauding companies by any means, however you have not noted doing anything that should have broken the pump thus far.

if you have done something bad that you have not yet mentioned, then you mighe very well be hosed. other than that.......politeness and persistance with first tec support and then warrenty might be you recourse.
 
Alright well I was completely honest. My roomate was in the room with my pump the whole time and it didn't make any noise while it was leaking. I am afraid that it might have stopped getting water while it was leaking, but there was still water in the system, and the connection didn't come all the way off.

so 75$ lighter, I should
A. Watch it like a hawk for leaks
B. Tighten the housing

What do you think actually did it and should I try to send it back?

does it still work, within the parameters that i mentioned earlier regarding testing it with drops of dye inot the T-line?
 
You get a new pump, read the instructions first, then snug up the ring on the housing then hook it up, fill it and get it as full as possible before firing it up. Fire it up, bleed the rest of the air out and watch it closely for the first hour at the very least, make sure all your clamps are tight and leak free.
 
I just got an email back from DD saying:

Sorry we can not take the pump back after it was run dry but I can offer you a 25% off on any new pump you need (any other parts you may need also)
I wish we could help but once the pumps have been run with out any water we can not warranty them, sorry.

But I didn't run the pump dry, here is what I told them (which is what they were responding to):

My dangen d5, which I bought a couple of months ago, but didn't put in until today broke after only an hour or so. I sprung a leak in my system and got a lot of air in it (although the pump was still getting a good amount of water from fill port). I assumed it was being loud just because of the air, but it got extremely loud so I cut it off, and now it won't come back on. After a quick disassembly, I have found that the impeller isn't center for some reason. Is this covered by the warrantee? And how would I go about returning the pump?

Should I press the issue? Or am I just going to get shot down?
 
Once it gets enough air in the pump it cavitates. Cavitation means that a cavity of air forms inside the pump so yes it was run dry, cavitation kills pumps in just a matter of minutes.

I'd be thankful that they're giving you 25% off your next order and take advantage of it by maybe getting a few extra things to offset the loss of the pump in savings.
