Bad cpu?

Ok so i'm building 2 computers with the same parts.

ECS X58 motherboard
i7 920
Corsair H50
6gb Corsair ram

so i have a problem.

One computer idles at 40 and loads at 75
One computer idles at 35 and loads at 55

I thought i was the H50 that was defective so i put the stock heat sink on and it read 50 idle and 84 load.

do you guys think i have a bad chip?

this is all at stock settings btw
 
yeah i tried it like 3 times already. same temps.

i even tried to take it all apart and do it over
 
I do not think something is necessarily wrong, maybe the chip just performs that way. To me chips are like everything else, even more so since there is a greater probibility for error in some odd million transistors.

Everything performs on a variance. Just like everything else some perform better then others.

That is just my opinion though.
 
That's still a pretty big difference.

Are they the same stepping? What're the bacth #s?
 
could have been produced at different times, and different batches......no 2 chips are similar, those temps dont seem too bad anyhow(with the H50 atleast....the other one would scare me :p )

Yes its a big difference, but it not like one is average, and the other is almost burning up. They are still both nominal temperatures well within a safe operating range.

I would run some benchmarks, make sure the chip is running fine. If it is causing errors or something and cannot complete benchmarks then yes the chip is bad.

Other then that, not every chip is a superstar chip. I have got unlucky twice, back when the thunderbirds first came out and were oc'ing pretty decently, mine would never go as far as everyone else's. Same with my barton. However my i7 920 (whose stupid motherboard just went out) was running fine at 3.8 on air, which is average. I think you just got a chip that disn't a great oc'er.
 
Are you just using the thermal paste that already came on the H50?

I would check to make sure you have the fan blowing the right way on the radiator (Blowing air from the outside through the radiator, and then have the inside fans taking air out).

Just wondering...If you were to take the warmer running cpu, and install it in the other motherboard, are you still getting the same temps?
